When Marvel Comics first created X-Factor, it was a compelling team, but it has evolved significantly over time. Originally launched in 1986, the initial roster reunited the original five X-Men, who publicly pretended to be mutant hunters. This was actually a disguise – their true mission was to secretly protect mutants in need. In 1991, the team became government-approved with Havok taking charge, leading them into ethically ambiguous situations. Later, Jamie Madrox reformed X-Factor as a detective agency staffed entirely by mutants.
Here’s a rundown of the team’s first ten members, listed from strongest to weakest.
10) Beast

I’ve always been fascinated by Beast! He’s such a cornerstone of the X-Men, being one of the very first five members, and he even helped start X-Factor. It’s interesting to me that, despite being incredibly intelligent, he was driven to rejoin the fight because he couldn’t find a university position. I know he was a bit hesitant at first, coming off a stint with the Defenders where things ended tragically with some members seemingly dying. Even though he’s incredibly strong, fast, and tough, it’s worth noting his powers are more about being a peak human – impressive, but not quite on the level of some others.
9) Angel/Archangel

Warren Worthington III, also known as Angel, was one of the original X-Men. Later, after Jean Grey’s return from death, he provided the funding and leadership to create the team X-Factor. He initially partnered with Cameron Hodge, who secretly manipulated events behind the scenes. During the X-Factor years, Angel faced devastating setbacks. He was critically injured during the “Mutant Massacre,” resulting in the amputation of his wings and the loss of his ability to fly. To make matters worse, Hodge betrayed him, staging a plane crash to appear as a suicide. Though Apocalypse rescued Angel and equipped him with new, bio-organic wings capable of killing, even these powerful wings don’t make him one of the team’s strongest fliers.
8) Multiple Man

Jamie Madrox was an original member of X-Factor, a team created with the government’s approval and led by Havok. He was recruited for the team by Valerie Cooper, alongside other mutants like Strong Guy, Polaris, Quicksilver, and Wolfsbane. After many years, Madrox took control of the X-Factor name and transformed the team into X-Factor Investigations, a detective agency specializing in mutant-related cases. His unique ability allows him to create fully independent copies of himself, and here’s the catch: everything his duplicates experience and learn is instantly absorbed by the original Jamie. He often sent out numerous duplicates to research various subjects, effectively making him incredibly knowledgeable in a wide range of fields.
7) Strong Guy

Strong Guy became a member of the government-funded X-Factor team after working as a bodyguard. He mainly joined for the stable income, but also because he was good friends with Wolfsbane and wanted to support her. His power allows him to absorb the energy from impacts, which then boosts his strength. However, using this ability often disfigures his body, and it’s limited by a serious health condition – a weak heart. Every time he uses his powers, he risks a potentially fatal heart attack. At his strongest, he’s been able to fight powerful enemies like Blob and Juggernaut.
6) Quicksilver

Quicksilver is a founding member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, but he’s also fought on the side of the Avengers several times. As the twin brother of the Scarlet Witch, he’s incredibly fast – one of the quickest characters in Marvel Comics. After leaving the Avengers, he joined X-Factor, a team led by Havok, and went through some marital difficulties with his wife, Crystal. While his speed—which reaches Mach levels—isn’t quite as high as depicted in the X-Men films, it’s still exceptionally fast, often allowing him to win fights before they even begin.
5) Cyclops

I’ve always been fascinated by Cyclops. He’s such a pivotal figure – he was the very first X-Man! It was really compelling to watch his journey with X-Factor, even though he was hesitant to join at first. Ultimately, leaving his life with Madelyne and his son, Nathan, to rejoin his old teammates created so much drama. Seeing him grapple with Jean Grey’s return was heartbreaking, but he eventually found a way to move forward. Of course, everyone knows about his optic blasts – incredibly powerful, but completely uncontrollable without his visor. But beyond the power, what truly sets him apart is his strategic mind. He’s undeniably the best tactical leader the mutant world has ever known.
4) Polaris

Lorna Dane, also known as Polaris, is the daughter of Magneto and the half-sister of Quicksilver. After spending years living on Muir Island, she was recruited by Cooper to join the government team X-Factor. Like her father, Polaris is a powerful mutant with the ability to control magnetic fields, metal, and even electromagnetic waves. Though not yet at her father’s Omega-level power, Polaris has the potential to become just as strong if she can master her abilities.
3) Havok

Havok shares a similar ability with his brother Cyclops, both absorbing cosmic radiation and releasing it as energy blasts. However, Havok’s blasts are hotter and more powerful than Cyclops’. When recruited by Valerie Cooper, Havok was intended to lead the new X-Factor team, and he often operated in a morally ambiguous way that the original members didn’t. At his strongest, Havok can level buildings and destroy even powerful Sentinels, though his blasts aren’t as precisely controlled.
2) Iceman

When Iceman first joined the X-Men, his powers were fairly simple: he could freeze things and create ice slides. Even when he became a founding member of X-Factor, that was still about the extent of his abilities, making him seem less powerful than the other members. But over time, Iceman’s true potential has been revealed. He’s actually an incredibly powerful Omega-level mutant, capable of controlling all water and temperature around him. He can instantly freeze huge bodies of water, and has even come back to life using only water. This power also makes him nearly immortal, and he theoretically could even trigger a new ice age – his abilities have no real limits.
1) Jean Grey

Jean Grey played a key role in the creation of X-Factor. After seemingly sacrificing herself to save the X-Men during “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” it was revealed she hadn’t actually died. The being who died was a Phoenix-created replacement. The real Jean had been in a state of suspended animation at the bottom of a lake since the Phoenix first appeared, and was discovered in a team-up adventure featuring both the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. Jean is an incredibly powerful mutant, considered one of the strongest ever. She’s the most powerful telepath on Earth, even stronger than Professor X, and her connection to the Phoenix Force further amplifies her abilities, making her more powerful than any other member of X-Factor.
