Mass Effect Actor Comments on Return of Their Controversial Character

A lot of discussion centers on whether Commander Shepard will reappear, and if they will be the main character once again. However, Shepard wasn’t the only hero of the series—Ryder, from the often-debated Mass Effect: Andromeda, was also a protagonist. Because of this, the fanbase is divided, and bringing Ryder back would likely cause even more disagreement.

Many fans doubt we’ll see Commander Shepard or even Ryder return in a significant role, especially since Andromeda wasn’t as well-received as the original trilogy and BioWare stopped actively developing it. However, recent promotional images for the new game include the Angara, a species exclusive to the Andromeda galaxy. This strongly suggests Andromeda will be part of the new story, making Ryder’s inclusion more likely and potentially easier to fit into the narrative than bringing back Shepard.

Tom Taylorson was recently interviewed about the possibility of Ryder appearing in future installments of the series. While he didn’t confirm whether Ryder is in the latest game, he did share his hopes for the character’s future development.

Ryder’s Future

Taylorson has often wished the established Ryder character had followed a storyline similar to Gil Brodie’s, allowing for exploration of both the Pathfinder role and parenthood. He believes this would be compelling both for the story and as an acting challenge. However, recognizing the popularity of games featuring adventurous dads, he suggests perhaps Sara Ryder could be a mother instead. He envisions a narrative where the burdens of being the Pathfinder have taken a toll, leaving Ryder more hardened and resembling Shepard, or alternatively, a more positive outcome where the Angara have successfully helped other species settle, making the Pathfinder role unnecessary. But then, a new crisis could force a reluctant, aging Ryder – much like himself and Fryda – back into service, creating a fun and relatable dynamic.

Ryder doesn’t share any concrete details, just his own thoughts about the character. However, if Ryder were a major part of the new game, Taylorson would likely be bound by a non-disclosure agreement and wouldn’t be giving this interview. While Taylorson’s quote itself doesn’t reveal much, the fact that he agreed to the interview is noteworthy and suggests Ryder might not be involved in the new game.
