The team behind the acclaimed Spider-Verse movies – Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – created Spider-Noir, bringing Nicolas Cage back to a role he originally played in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. But this time, it’s a live-action series, set in a gritty, 1930s New York City. Unlike previous stories, this series focuses on Ben Reilly (Cage), a cynical private investigator with a history as the city’s masked hero. The eight-episode show features a strong cast, including Brendan Gleeson as Silvermane, Jack Huston as Sandman, and Abraham Popoola as Tombstone – all classic villains given a fresh, noir-inspired makeover. A new trailer reveals Ben Reilly possesses a power fans will be excited to see.
The newest trailer for Spider-Noir strongly suggests that Ben Reilly’s webs are created naturally within his body. A clear shot of his hand shooting a web confirms he doesn’t need any special devices – he produces the webbing himself. This makes Cage’s Ben Reilly the first live-action Spider-Person shown with organic webs since Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, who last appeared in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Spider-Man’s Organic Webs Are on the Rise Once Again

Giving Ben Reilly the ability to create his own organic webbing opens up exciting possibilities for the Spider-Noir storyline, potentially exploring parts of Spider-Man’s history that haven’t been seen much in movies and TV. In the comics, Ben Reilly is known as the Scarlet Spider, a clone of Peter Parker involved in a very complex story. While Spider-Noir hasn’t confirmed a clone storyline yet, casting a character so closely linked to that idea suggests a deeper exploration of identity beyond a simple origin story. Giving Ben Reilly organic webs helps set him apart from other Spider-Men, like Peter Parker, who usually rely on man-made webbing in the Spider-Verse films.
The unique web-spinning ability shown in the game Spider-Noir might be a hint of a bigger plan across Sony’s Spider-Man projects. The trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day game revealed that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is developing organic webs – webs created by his body, not technology. This transformation, which one character warns could be risky, is inspired by comic book storylines where Parker’s powers become more connected to his spider DNA. If this biological web-spinning appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both the Spider-Noir game and Brand New Day will feature Spider-Man’s powers coming from his biology instead of gadgets. This connection is especially significant for Sony, as it links the dark, 1930s setting of Spider-Noir to the large-scale action of Brand New Day, demonstrating Sony’s strong ownership of the Spider-Man character.
The new animated series, Spider-Noir, will debut on MGM+ on May 25th. All eight episodes will then be available to stream worldwide on Prime Video starting May 27th.
