Continuing the trend of blended narratives as seen in 2020’s Time Lord Victorious, a fresh Doctor Who venture titled Circuit Breaker has been unveiled for 2026.
The tale, being a joint venture among BBC Studios, BBC Audio, Big Finish Productions, Doctor Who Magazine, East Side Games, Penguin Random House, and Titan Comics, will feature Jo Martin as the Fugitive Doctor. This story aims to present a grand connected plot that will unfold across various platforms, allowing fans to explore the mystery from diverse perspectives.
The story was skillfully written by the renowned author, Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson, and it unfolds with mysterious alien artifacts mysteriously showing up within the UNIT’s secret vault known as the Black Archive.
The summary indicates that each item is distinctively associated with a specific regeneration of the Doctor; however, they’ve been altered or manipulated in some way.
An enigmatic, distorted energy pulse emanates from them, seemingly originating from an unidentified source. Their unexpected emergence rips small fissures through the fabric of both time and space.
Since UNIT has exhausted all possible solutions, it’s crucial to return the objects to their original time points to mend the disruption and reestablish the timeline. Failing to do so might lead to the unraveling of the Doctor’s journeys and even the entire universe.
To unravel this enigma, the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce summons an obscure manifestation of the Time Lord: the Runaway Doctor, portrayed by Jo Martin, taking center stage once more. However, one might wonder, how does UNIT have knowledge of her? Could she be the Doctor they’ve been anticipating?

Martin expressed his excitement in a statement, stating, “I can’t wait to share more tales about the Fugitive Doctor and I’m eager for fans to unravel all the surprises and plot twists in the Circuit Breaker narrative.
I’ve held this character close to my heart for a long time, and I find great pleasure in expanding her impact and returning to the world of Doctor Who again.
In the meantime, Stephen Davies, SVP of Global Licensing at BBC Studios, stated: “Circuit Breaker is an exhilarating development within the Whoniverse. By collaborating with top-tier partners in publishing, audio, comics, and gaming, we’re constructing a deeply engaging, multi-faceted experience for enthusiasts.
This move aims to broaden the reach of Doctor Who, foster stronger connections with fans, delve into fresh narratives, and invite novel spectators into the Doctor’s multiverse.
During Jodie Whittaker’s tenure, a version of Martin’s Doctor (known as the Fugitive Doctor) was introduced. This incarnation existed before William Hartnell’s First Doctor and appeared most recently for a brief role in season 15 episode “The Story and the Engine.
At this point, a Circuit Breaker has been declared, coinciding with multiple upcoming or developing Doctor Who ventures. These include a fresh spin-off titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea” and an animated series tailored for CBeebies.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m eagerly anticipating updates about the fate of our beloved series, with bated breath, as we all await word on the collaboration between BBC and Disney.
