As a lifelong movie and comic book fan, I’ve always been captivated by Superman. He really is the original superhero – the one who paved the way for so many others. He’s not just incredibly powerful, being the last survivor of Krypton and all, but he’s become the definitive symbol of DC Comics. From the moment he arrived on Earth, he was a force to be reckoned with, and honestly, he’s only gotten stronger. Even now, he’s still the hero I think of when a huge threat emerges in the DC Universe – the guy who can always be counted on to save the day.
As a comic book movie critic, I’ve always said Superman represents the ultimate power fantasy, but even the Man of Steel isn’t invincible. Surprisingly, he’s lost quite a few battles over the years – and those defeats often make for the most compelling stories. Today, I want to highlight seven heroes who’ve actually beaten Superman. Most of them are heavy hitters, right up there with DC’s elite, and one… well, one is just plain funny. So, let’s dive in and look at some times Superman actually lost.
7) Batman

Let’s start with the most well-known rivalry: Batman and Superman. As DC’s most popular heroes, and representing very different approaches to heroism, they often clash. While Superman is physically far more powerful, Batman’s cleverness and planning have allowed him to win a few times. Their most famous fight happened in The Dark Knight Returns #4, where Batman defeated Superman using advanced armor and Kryptonite, proving he could win even against overwhelming odds. However, most opponents don’t have access to Kryptonite, and they don’t really need it.
6) Captain Atom

Captain Atom often loses battles in DC Comics, but that’s usually to highlight the strength of other characters. However, he’s incredibly powerful himself – on par with Superman, and able to control radiation and nuclear energy. At his strongest, Captain Atom can even manipulate reality at the atomic level, allowing feats like time travel and transforming matter. This power was fully showcased in DC K.O.: Superman vs. Captain Atom, where he convincingly defeated Superman in the first round, even dismantling and killing him. While Superman returned later, Captain Atom proved he was at least as strong as the Man of Steel, and potentially even more so.
5) Spectre

The Spectre is incredibly powerful, ranking among the strongest beings in the DC Universe. As the living representation of God’s anger, he could easily defeat even formidable villains like Darkseid. He operates on a completely different scale of power than most heroes. When he clashes with others, even entire teams of heroes struggle to withstand his immense strength and usually fall in battle. In one encounter, detailed in DC Presents #29, Superman fought the Spectre alone. Supergirl was sent hurtling beyond reality, and the Spectre intervened to prevent Superman from breaking the laws of the universe while trying to save her. Despite throwing everything he had at the Spectre, Superman couldn’t even make him flinch. Throughout the fight, the Spectre taught Superman the importance of asking for assistance.
4) Supergirl

Kara Zor-El, also known as the Woman of Tomorrow, has defeated Superman in several encounters. Supergirl is often considered even more powerful than Superman, and a prime example of this is in Supergirl (2011) #2. After crash-landing on Earth, she physically overpowered Superman, repeatedly punching him through the Great Wall of China. Despite his attempts to reason with her, Kara’s superior strength allowed her to easily push him away. They eventually stopped fighting to protect bystanders, but this incident clearly demonstrates Supergirl’s immense power, even when she’s newly arrived on Earth.
3) Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is DC Comics’ most popular female hero, and she’s frequently challenged by its top male hero, Superman. While Superman may be physically stronger, Wonder Woman is one of the few heroes who can match his power level, and she’s a more skilled fighter. Their most intense battle happened in Wonder Woman #175 (1987). The villain Circe turned all the male heroes into crazed animal-human hybrids, and only Wonder Woman could confront Superman. He brutally attacked her, but Diana refused to give up. Ultimately, she used her Lasso of Truth to calm him down, ending the fight and proving her victory.
2) Green Lantern

The Green Lantern’s power ring is famously one of the most powerful weapons in the universe. While Superman is usually stronger than a single Green Lantern, Hal Jordan gained a significant advantage in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #4. When the villain Nezha took control of Green Lantern and magically enhanced the ring, its constructs were actually able to harm Superman. With Superman’s invulnerability weakened and the magic draining his strength, Hal decisively defeated him until Batman intervened. Although it wasn’t a straightforward victory, the fight demonstrated that Hal Jordan is a formidable opponent even for Superman.
1) Jimmy Olsen

Jimmy Olsen is Superman’s best friend, and despite not seeming like a threat, he’s the person I’d rely on most to stop Superman if necessary. He’s a fascinating character, constantly shifting between incredible luck and terrible misfortune, all for comedic effect. Their most famous confrontation happened in All-Star Superman #4. At that time, Superman was at the peak of his powers, making his exposure to Black Kryptonite even more dangerous. Luckily, Jimmy had a plan: he intentionally infected himself with an experimental formula, turning him into Doomsday. He managed to defeat the corrupted Superman, and together they both recovered their sanity.
