Stephen King has written over sixty novels that have been adapted into numerous films and TV series. However, HBO’s recent prequel, IT: Welcome to Derry, has particularly excited fans. The show brought back Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise and expanded on the story told in the blockbuster IT movies. It also included details from King’s original novel that hadn’t been seen on screen before. What’s more, the showrunners have already outlined plans for future seasons, explaining how the series can coexist with the existing IT films.
The future of ‘Welcome to Derry’ Season 2 seems secure. The first episode attracted a large audience, and the show’s creators have been hinting at progress for a while. In an interview with Deadline, executive producer Andy Muschietti shared more details, confirming the season will go back in time to 1935 and show the events of the Bradley Gang massacre in Derry. Muschietti said they are enjoying working on it, but explained that this shift in timeline will significantly change how the story of ‘IT’ is told.
IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Will Rewrite the Structure of the Story

As a big fan, I’ve noticed something cool about how the IT story – including the movies and the first season of Welcome to Derry – always follows the same pattern. It’s usually about a group of friends, often kids, who are the first to realize Pennywise is back and they have to find a way to stop him, even though nobody else believes them. The suburban setting has always been a big part of that, really highlighting the creepiness of Pennywise’s nightmares. But I’m hearing that Season 2 of Welcome to Derry is going to go even further back in time, and it sounds like they’re moving away from that familiar suburban backdrop, which is a really interesting change!
Muschietti explained that this stage of development is exciting because the story is set during the Great Depression, a time that fundamentally alters the world the characters inhabit. Unlike typical stories about kids in comfortable suburban neighborhoods, this one takes place in 1935, a time of hardship and poverty. People were simply trying to survive, which will create a very different atmosphere and set of challenges.
Muschietti is correct that this significantly alters the typical structure of an IT story. While some fans might not appreciate the change, it’s a positive step towards keeping the IT universe fresh and avoiding repetition. Hints of Season 2’s direction were already present in the first Welcome to Derry episodes – such as the fate of the Bradley Gang and Pennywise’s appearance to Ingrid Kersh – but now it’s clear the new season will explore completely new ground from the very beginning.
Beyond confirming a second season, director Andy Muschietti revealed plans for a potential third season. This season would go back in time to 1908, exploring the events surrounding the Kitchener Iron Works explosion – an event hinted at in the original 2017 ‘IT’ movie. Muschietti explained that the explosion, which happened during an Easter egg hunt and resulted in the deaths of around one hundred children, was connected to the evil entity ‘IT’, who was, as he put it, behind the tragedy.
Although discussions are underway for a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry, HBO hasn’t officially confirmed its renewal. Therefore, there’s no confirmed release date at this time.
