Sydney Sweeney should be euphoric over her R-rated drama‘s new streaming success.
Sydney Sweeney is currently appearing in season 3 of the popular, and often controversial, show Euphoria on HBO Max, alongside Zendaya and Jacob Elordi. She’s been very successful on streaming platforms recently, with her 2023 thriller Reality becoming a hit on HBO Max in April. Another one of her recent projects is also performing well on the streaming service, climbing the charts and gaining popularity.
The 2025 film Christy initially faced criticism and didn’t perform well in theaters. However, it’s now found success on streaming platforms, currently ranking as the #4 most-watched movie in the United States as of April 27, 2026 – a jump from its #8 position yesterday.
While critics gave the film Christy a generally positive score of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, it didn’t translate to ticket sales. Despite some good reviews and the appeal of its star, the movie only earned $2.3 million at the box office, falling far short of its $15 million production budget.
A review from ScreenRant, published in September 2025 by Christy, reflects the general reaction to the film. Christy criticized the movie for not providing a comprehensive portrayal of its subject, describing it as superficial and uneven. While praising Sydney Sweeney’s performance, the review suggests she deserved a stronger and more consistent film to truly shine.
A November 2025 article in ScreenRant praised the film’s boxing sequences, noting their realistic and impactful portrayal of the sport. The article highlighted how director David Michôd and actress Sweeney (along with the actors playing her opponents) created a raw and intense feeling that many other boxing movies lack, giving the character of Christy a believable strength and demonstrating a strong understanding of why boxing is so captivating on screen.
Christy Martin didn’t receive the same understanding from many in the LGBTQ+ community. They protested the casting of actress Rebecca Sweeney as the real-life, closeted lesbian boxer, primarily because of political disagreements. Ruby Rose, known for her role in Orange is the New Black, who initially lost the lead role in Christy to Sweeney, was particularly vocal with her criticism. In a November 2025 post on Threads, Rose wrote that the claims about the show’s failure being for ‘the people’ were untrue, arguing that the LGBTQ+ community doesn’t want to see someone who expresses hatred towards them pretending to be one of them.
Rose angrily stated, “You’re awful and you destroyed the movie. Christy deserved so much more.” Regardless of whether her criticism was fair, and despite the film’s poor performance in theaters, it’s likely to be successful on streaming platforms, giving Sweeney’s excellent acting a chance to shine.
