Jinger Duggar Details “Reopened Wounds” Amid Joseph Duggar’s Arrest

Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo are digging into the past to find answers about Joseph Duggar’s arrest. 

Just a month after Jinger’s younger brother was accused of harming a child – charges he denies – she and her husband discussed the harmful beliefs they were raised with in the Duggar family, and the legal issues several family members are now dealing with.

Lately, with everything happening with my brother Joe and all the attention it’s brought up – honestly, it’s stirred up a lot of old feelings. People have been asking how we’re handling it, and it’s a fair question. To be completely honest, we were just as surprised by the news as everyone else, and we’re still figuring things out. We don’t have all the answers right now, but we’re navigating it the best we can.

Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo were surprised by the arrest of Jinger’s father, Joseph Duggar, but noted it reminded them of the 2021 arrest of Jinger’s brother, Josh Duggar. Josh is currently in prison serving a 12-year sentence after being convicted of possessing illegal child sexual abuse material. This conviction followed revelations in 2015 that he had sexually abused his younger sisters when he was a teenager.

The couple thought about how the Duggar family’s strict religious beliefs might have caused problems for them.

Jeremy and I have talked so much about how harmful Bill Gothard’s teachings are – and how much they affected my family, honestly. He just reminded me that it’s super important to really think critically about what we believe, and I totally agree. It’s something we’ve both been so passionate about exposing, and it feels good to keep saying it.

Jinger, 32, nodded along as Jeremy explained the harmful effects of Doug Phillips and the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP). These principles formed the religious foundation of the Duggar family’s original TLC reality show, 19 Kids and Counting.

Bill Gothard resigned from the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) in 2014 after accusations of sexual misconduct. He denied the most severe claims of rape but admitted to acting inappropriately and exceeding professional boundaries. In 2023, following the release of a documentary detailing allegations of enabling abuse, the IBLP dismissed the accusations as sensationalized and emphasized that their focus remains on Jesus Christ and biblical teachings, not on any individual or family.

Just over a month after addressing the arrest of Jinger and Jeremy’s brother, Joseph Duggar, and his wife Kendra for endangering their children, the couple is now reflecting on their own upbringing. The arrests, which took place in Arkansas, followed previous charges against Joseph in Florida. Both he and Kendra, who have four children, face multiple counts of child endangerment, but haven’t yet entered a plea in the Arkansas case. They described the situation as “devastating.”

Jinger shared on her podcast on March 25th that she felt immense heartbreak this week. She described the pain as overwhelming, not just for herself, but also because of the impact it’s had on others. She said it’s been incredibly difficult to process on multiple levels.

Joseph Duggar‘s parents broke their silence in a statement on March 30.

A representative for the Duggar family shared with Us Weekly that Jim Bob and Michelle are deeply saddened by everything that’s happening. Their priority right now is supporting Kendra and her children through this challenging period.

The spokesperson said the couple is praying for the person who was harmed and requests privacy during this difficult time. They are grateful for the support and kind thoughts they’ve received.

On March 19th, we were surprised to hear about the arrest of Jill’s brother, Joseph Duggar. We found out through a friend who sent us a text about news reports claiming Joseph confessed to harming a young girl in 2020. We are both shocked and deeply saddened by this news.

Derick and Jill, who publicly shared their experiences with the family in the 2023 book Counting the Cost, stated they firmly denounce abuse.

Josh is deeply aware of the harm that accusations can cause, his lawyer explained to the Daily Mail on March 20th. He knows firsthand how false claims can ruin someone’s life and how someone can be unfairly targeted for public attention, leading to distorted and exaggerated stories.

The attorney stated that Josh, who is currently in prison for 12 years for possessing child pornography, doesn’t communicate often with Joseph. He added that Josh hopes his brother is doing okay and is praying for him during this challenging period.

Jana and her husband shared on Instagram that they were devastated to learn about the situation involving her brother, Joseph. They said the news was completely unexpected and that they hadn’t known anything about it before it became public.

We are deeply saddened by the harm done to this child, and we condemn this terrible act. Our thoughts are with the victim and their family, and we hope justice will be served.

The couple, married earlier this year, expressed their outrage over what they called the shocking behavior of his brother, Joseph.

Jason and Maddie shared a statement on Instagram on March 26th, saying they were deeply shocked, confused, and saddened by recent news. While they were personally affected, they emphasized their heartbreak for the child whose life has been devastated by these harmful actions, stating that someone should never harm the vulnerable.

Maddie and I have always cared deeply about protecting those who are vulnerable, and that will never change,” their statement continued. “The idea that someone would use their power to harass innocent people is truly disgusting.

People requested prayers for the victim, described as brave, and for Joseph’s family. They noted the particular hardship for his children, who will grow up without the guidance of a father who should have been a strong spiritual influence.

Joy-Anna shared on Instagram on March 26th that she was devastated by the recent news about her brother. She expressed her sympathy for the victim and said she’s been deeply upset and taking time to cope with the situation.

She added, “I will be taking some much-needed time with my family.”

On the March 25th episode of The Jinger & Jeremy Podcast, Jeremy shared that they had a challenging week, and were taking time to process and pray about something before discussing it on the show.

Jinger, who relocated to Los Angeles with Jeremy in 2019, shared that she felt immense heartbreak this week. She described the pain and sadness as overwhelming, not only for herself but also considering the impact on others. She said it’s been a deeply difficult and painful experience on multiple levels.

It really is just… overwhelming. When news like this hits, all I can do is turn to God, honestly. I just pray for strength and help because you simply can’t prepare for something like this. It feels like all you can do is ask for support to get through it.

In a statement to People magazine on March 20, Joseph’s cousin expressed feeling devastated, heartbroken, and furious. They said their primary concern was for the young victim, who should have been safe, cared for, and surrounded by trustworthy people.

Amy explained she was “utterly shocked to hear about these allegations and Joseph’s arrest.”

As someone who’s dedicated their life to advocating for what’s right, I’ve always believed in being honest and holding people accountable – even when it’s incredibly difficult, like when it impacts your own family. I truly believe that family relationships shouldn’t automatically grant trust, especially when the well-being of children is at stake. Protecting kids always has to come first, regardless of who they are related to.
