Wiccan & Hulkling: Raid of Ultron #1 Writer Teases Chaotic Family Reunion Full of Heart (Exclusive)

As Pride Month approaches, Marvel is releasing a special comic featuring popular characters Wiccan and Hulkling. The new issue, “Wiccan & Hulkling: Raid of Ultron #1,” arrives in comic shops on May 27th and is unique because it contains several stories by a talented group of creators, including musician Tegan Quin of Tegan and Sara. The main story, written by Wyatt Kennedy (who also wrote “Wiccan: Witches’ Road”), kicks things off with a disrupted anniversary celebration, and ComicBook has the scoop.

This issue, illustrated by Stephen Byrne, continues the story from Witches Road, beginning with Wiccan and Hulkling’s anniversary party at their new home. The celebration quickly takes a dark turn when Ultron arrives with an army, turning the event into a chaotic and unsettling family gathering. We discussed the story with Kennedy, focusing on its relatable themes and the overall significance of the issue.

Wiccan & Hulkling: Raid of Ultron Will. Have Heart (And Plenty of Family “Ass Kicking”)

ComicBook asked about writing Wiccan, especially with the increased attention the character has received thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They noted the writer’s previous work on Wiccan (specifically ‘Wiccan: Witches’ Road’) and wanted to know what it’s been like working on the character as he gains popularity with new fans.

Wyatt Kennedy says taking on the role is definitely a challenge, but a welcome one. Billy has a complex backstory that might seem daunting to some, and Kennedy’s main focus is always to make stories easy for new readers to enjoy.

“Wiccan & Hulkling: Raid of Ultron” continues the story from “Wiccan: Witches’ Road.” Without giving away any secrets, what can readers expect from this new installment?

Family reunions can be complicated, right? Think of it like that, but with a sci-fi twist. This story explores hidden tensions and old conflicts between characters, revealing new dynamics and forcing them to confront issues from their past. While the details might be a bit different – maybe involving robots! – the core idea of unresolved family issues is something many people can understand.

This story feels a bit like a messy family reunion, complete with an unwelcome guest – in this case, Ultron. What inspired this plot, and what kind of mood or atmosphere should readers prepare for?

It’s not quite a disappointing addition – it’s more like that relative who’s embraced the internet a little too much. The idea actually came from Marvel’s editors, and I was really excited about it given all the characters we’re working with. Readers can expect a lot of laughs, emotional moments, and some serious family action!

This book is being released during Pride Month, which feels especially fitting. What does it mean to you to share this story as part of Marvel’s Pride celebration?

We’re currently facing a difficult time for LGBTQ+ people, and it’s important for all readers, especially young ones, to see families built on love and support. These stories can offer comfort to those who may not have that in their own lives, and inspire hope for building strong, protective relationships. Superhero comics have always been about powerful figures protecting others, and that same principle applies to families as well.

What has been your favorite thing about Wiccan & Hulkling: Raid of Ultron #1?

It’s been amazing to see such a diverse range of stories, created by some incredibly talented people. There really is something in this collection for all tastes!
