The new series Man on Fire is based on the popular 1980 novel by A.J. Quinnell. It follows John Creasy, a former Special Forces soldier, as he battles his inner demons and dangerous adversaries while protecting a young girl in Rio de Janeiro. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stars in the lead role, which was previously played by Denzel Washington in the 2004 movie. Kyle Killen (known for Fear Street Part One: 1994 and Halo) is the showrunner and executive producer.
Man on Fire Star Opens Up About His Character’s Trauma in New Netflix Series
I was really excited to see Netflix release a sneak peek earlier this month! It gives you a taste of the intense action we can expect when the series finally drops at the end of the month. I also read an interview with the lead actor, Abdul-Mateen, on Netflix’s Tudum site, and he talked about what makes his character so complex and broken – it sounds like there’s a lot of emotional weight to this role.
Abdul-Mateen explained that past trauma has made the character fearful of forming connections, being honest with others, and letting his guard down. This has essentially stalled his progress for a long time. Fortunately, a key relationship in the show provides him with much-needed focus and motivation.
Creasy forms a surprising bond with the young girl he’s protecting, Poe (Billie Boullet), and they quickly become very close. According to actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, they connect by building trust and finding what they both need in each other. Creasy longs for a friend, while Poe craves a family connection.
A central theme of the show this season is whether Creasy can overcome his difficult past and form meaningful connections with others. According to showrunner Josh Killen, the story focuses on Creasy learning to trust people, opening up, and realizing he’s more effective working with a team than alone.
