As a lifelong puzzle game fan, I’ve always loved how many different kinds of puzzles there are! From matching colors to figuring out patterns and even word games, they’ve been around since the very first consoles. And they’re still super popular today, especially on our phones. While modern console puzzle games are much more complex now, they still feel connected to those classic games from the 70s. I’ve put together a list of what I think are the best puzzle games from each console generation, based on what critics said when they first came out, how much they influenced the genre, and, most importantly, how fun they are to play!
1st) Haunted House

1st Gen: Atari Pong | Coleco Telstar | Magnavox Odyssey
While a few puzzle games came out for the earliest video game consoles, Haunted House on the Magnavox Odyssey stands out as the best. It was similar to the board game Clue, but set in a spooky mansion. Players used plastic screens that overlaid on the TV, turning dots on the screen into rooms and offering clues. One player acted as the Detective, trying to find hidden treasure, while the other played as the Ghost. Even with the console’s simple technology, Haunted House was surprisingly enjoyable.
2nd) Loco-Motion

2nd Gen: Atari 2600 | Channel F | ColecoVision | Intellivision | Magnavox Odyssey 2
Puzzle games became increasingly popular during the early days of home consoles. One standout title from that era is Loco-Motion by Konami, which is often considered the best puzzle game of its generation. Originally an arcade game, it found a large audience on the Intellivision. The gameplay involved connecting tracks to guide a train, picking up passengers and delivering them to their destinations. It was a clever take on the classic sliding-block puzzle, and proved to be very addictive. While this type of game isn’t as common now, it was a huge hit in the early 1980s.
3rd) Tetris

3rd Gen: Atari 7800 | Nintendo Entertainment System | Sega Master System
When people think of puzzle games, Tetris is often the first that comes to mind. It’s the most famous, best-selling, and overall most successful puzzle game ever created, making it the clear winner for the 3rd generation of consoles. While there’s some discussion about which version is best, many Western players actually prefer the Game Boy version over the one for the Nintendo Entertainment System. However, since we’re focusing on home consoles, we’ve highlighted the NES version, though the best version really comes down to personal preference.
4th) Puzzle Bobble

4th Gen: TurboGrafx-16 | Genesis | Neo Geo | Super Nintendo Entertainment System
The popularity of Tetris led to many similar puzzle games, one of which was Puzzle Bobble by Taito. Instead of arranging falling blocks, Puzzle Bobble challenges players to shoot colored bubbles at rows that descend from the top of the screen. Originally an arcade game, it was later released on consoles like the SNK Neo Geo and Super Nintendo, among others. Many consider it the best puzzle game of the 4th generation of consoles, even with other strong contenders. Puzzle Bobble is incredibly addictive and especially fun when played with a friend, as it can become quite competitive.
5th) Pokémon Puzzle League

5th Gen: 3DO | Jaguar | PlayStation | Nintendo 64
Unlike most Pokémon games, Pokémon Puzzle League deeply incorporates the series’ story, starring Ash Ketchum, Pikachu, and many of their friends. It’s a block-matching puzzle game where you connect blocks of the same color to clear them and prevent them from stacking up. The game features both a traditional 2D mode and a unique 3D mode played inside a cylinder, which made it more engaging than similar games like Tetris Attack – it was originally intended as a sequel to that game before being redesigned with a Pokémon theme.
6th) ChuChu Rocket!

6th Gen: GameCube | Dreamcast | PlayStation 2 | Xbox
When the sixth generation of consoles arrived, puzzle games were popular, and a surprising standout title came from Sega’s Dreamcast. ChuChu Rocket!, released in 1999, was the first game created to showcase the Dreamcast’s online features. It’s a fast-paced puzzle game where you guide mice to safety in rockets by placing arrows on a board, all while avoiding cats. In multiplayer, players compete to rescue the most mice. The game was a critical and commercial hit, and has since been released on many other systems, including the Game Boy Advance.
7th) Portal 2

7th Gen: PlayStation 3 | Wii | Xbox 360
By the time the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were released, puzzle platformer games had become much more sophisticated. Puzzles were no longer just add-ons; they were central to the gameplay experience, and Portal 2 perfectly demonstrated this. This critically acclaimed game from Valve allowed players to create portals to navigate environments and solve challenges. Portal 2 is widely considered one of the greatest video games of all time, earning praise for its clever puzzles, funny writing, engaging story, and well-balanced gameplay. It easily stood out as the best game of its generation.
8th) Tetris Effect

8th Gen: Nintendo Switch | PlayStation 4 | Wii U | Xbox One
The original Tetris is a timeless favorite, but many different versions exist. One standout release came in 2018 with Tetris Effect. Like the classic game, Tetris Effect challenges players to fit falling blocks together to clear lines. However, it adds beautiful new visuals and music across 30 unique stages, where the gameplay syncs with the beat of each song. It also includes new features, like the ability to temporarily stop time, and an even more enhanced “Connected” version. Tetris Effect was praised by players worldwide and is a fantastic addition to the Tetris series.
9th) Toem

9th Gen: Nintendo Switch | PlayStation 5 | Xbox Series X|S
The latest generation of gaming consoles boasts a fantastic selection of puzzle games, and one standout title is Toem, also known as TOEM: A Photo Adventure. In this charming game, you play as a photographer climbing a mountain to see a mysterious sight called the “Toem.” You solve puzzles by taking pictures, switching between a top-down view of the world and a first-person camera mode. Toem is a fun, unique puzzle game that’s been critically acclaimed and even earned a sequel, Toem 2, which is expected to release in the third quarter of 2026.
10th) Blue Prince

10th Gen: Nintendo Switch 2 | PlayStation 6 | Xbox Project Helix
There’s currently no agreement on when the next generation of consoles—the 10th generation—began or will begin. However, some industry experts believe the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 will mark the start of this new generation. With that in mind, the best puzzle game released so far is Blue Prince, and it looks fantastic on the Switch 2. Released in 2025 on various platforms, Blue Prince is a puzzle adventure where players explore a constantly shifting mansion with 45 rooms. The game has received critical acclaim for its challenging gameplay and detailed puzzles, earning it numerous awards.
