Laura Dern is getting her passport stamped.
Shailene Woodley, known for her role in Big Little Lies, will be joining season four of HBO’s The White Lotus. HBO announced the news on social media on April 28th, just days after Helena Bonham Carter left the show.
Let me tell you, I was doing some digging and found out this isn’t actually Laura Dern’s first appearance on the show! She actually lent her voice to a really intense phone call back in season two – she was the voice of Abby, Dominic Di Grasso’s (Michael Imperioli) ex-wife. It was a quick cameo, totally uncredited at the time, but a memorable one! This season, though, we’re finally going to see her on screen, and I couldn’t be more excited.
In the season two premiere, Dern’s character angrily told the person on the other end of the line, “Stop it, Dom.” She continued, “I don’t need your apologies anymore. I’ve wasted enough time already. I don’t want to hear from you again! Please, it’s over! Leave me alone! I’m done with you!” She ended the call with harsh and forceful language.
Laura Dern won’t be reprising her role as Abby. Instead, she’ll be playing a brand new character created for her by Mike White, who she previously worked with on the HBO show Enlightened. While she’s taking over for Helena Bonham Carter, the part was written specifically with Dern in mind.
The award-winning actress has joined the cast just days after another former Harry Potter star unexpectedly left the project. Helena Bonham Carter decided to leave production only nine days into filming in France, where she was working with a cast including AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, Chris Messina, and Max Greenfield, among others.
An HBO spokesperson told TopMob News on April 24th that the character originally created for Helena Bonham Carter in season four of The White Lotus didn’t work out during filming. The role is being rewritten and will be played by a different actor in the coming weeks.

The network expressed sadness about Helena Bonham Carter leaving the production, but stated they remain big fans and hope to collaborate with her on future projects.
The fourth season of The White Lotus will take place in France during the Cannes Film Festival, focusing on the experiences of the hotel’s guests. Read on to learn more.

HBO has confirmed a fourth season of The White Lotus, set to arrive in January 2025. The renewal came several weeks before the third season even aired, following a pitch from the show’s creator, Mike White, outlining more stories of wealth, mystery, and trouble.
HBO CEO Casey Bloys said in November that if Mike wants to continue the show for a fourth season, it will happen.
Production on season four kicked off in April 2026.

In December, HBO announced the series would be filmed in France. Reports in January confirmed the main location would be the Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez, a beautifully restored 19th-century palace now operating as a luxury hotel.
Before the announcement was made, actress Parker Posey, who previously appeared in the show, told TopMob News that the cast and crew of The White Lotus were planning to film in France.
White and fellow producers had been dropping hints, too.
HBO Programming executive Francesca Orsi told Deadline in February that they’ll be scouting locations over the next few weeks. While she wouldn’t reveal specifics, she indicated they’re likely looking at places in Europe.
Chances, she emphasized.
Orsi explained that while they’ve discussed potential filming locations in certain countries, they haven’t started looking at specific sites yet, so there’s no news to share at this time.
I was so fascinated to hear Casey White talk after the season three finale on HBO! He mentioned wanting to move away from the really intense, dramatic storytelling style we’ve seen – he called it the ‘crashing waves against rocks’ approach – and try something a little different next season. It sounds like he’s aiming for a bit of a change of pace, which I’m really excited about!
“But,” he added, “there’s always room for more murders at the White Lotus hotels.”
During the Vivid Festival in Sydney in June 2023, White shared that Australia is a place he’s always wanted to visit.
He said it sounded like a lot of fun, noting the incredible talent and obvious beauty made it seem like a perfect fit.

The cast of the upcoming project includes Alexander Ludwig, known from The Hunger Games, and singer AJ Michalka of Aly & AJ. They were the first actors announced, and were soon joined by Chris Messina, Marissa Long, Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Chloe Bennet, Max Greenfield, Charlie Hall, Kumail Nanjiani, and Jarrad Paul.

HBO initially announced in January 2026 that Helena Bonham Carter would appear in season four, but shortly after filming started, they confirmed she was leaving the show and her character’s storyline would be changed.
An HBO spokesperson told TopMob News in April 2026 that a character created for Helena Bonham Carter in season four of The White Lotus didn’t work out during filming. The role is being rewritten and will be played by a different actor in the coming weeks.
HBO, along with the show’s creators and Mike White, expressed their disappointment about not being able to continue working with the actress. They remain big fans and hope to collaborate with her on a future project.

As a bit of a culture buff, I was surprised to hear that Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, the incredibly talented composer behind the iconic White Lotus theme, won’t be returning for season four. Apparently, he and the show’s creator, Mike White, had creative differences that actually started way back in season one. It’s a shame, as his music really set the tone for the show, but it sounds like it was a long-standing difference of opinion.
Tapia de Veer explained to the New York Times that a few months prior, he’d informed the team he wouldn’t be returning. He deliberately waited to tell Mike Flanagan, wanting to deliver the news as a surprise at the very end of the project. However, Flanagan did eventually learn about the decision before the season concluded.
Oh my god, can we talk about the theme music for a second? It’s so good, I mean, it hooked me instantly and they even brought it back for season two! But apparently, it was a huge battle to get it made. The composer, Tapia de Veer, said it was a real struggle because the creator, White, initially didn’t even want it! Can you believe it? It’s such a perfect fit now, it’s hard to imagine the show without it. He said you only see it as a success after all the fighting, and honestly, I’m just so grateful they finally included it!
I was so surprised when the showrunner decided to completely change the opening sequence for season three! No one asked him to, as far as anyone knows, but he did it anyway, and honestly, a lot of us fans were really upset about it.

After the change was made public, I was contacted by media outlets like TMZ, and even people from England and France, all wanting a comment. The reaction was incredibly strong – people were really upset about the new theme. I suggested to the producer that we eventually release the longer version, with the ‘ooh-loo-loo-loos,’ because I thought fans would be even more shocked to discover that version existed. He agreed, but Mike ultimately decided against it; he didn’t think it was a good idea.
The composer explained that they’d already had what felt like their final argument at that time, and because of that, the other person was refusing everything.
On April 8th’s The Howard Stern Show, White criticized Tapia de Veer’s decision to publicly complain, calling it a disrespectful act.
I really don’t understand what went wrong,” White explained. “Now I’m seeing interviews where he’s talking about his departure as a publicity move, and it feels like he didn’t have much respect for me.
The producer explained they didn’t actually have a real conflict. He said people thought they were feuding, but it was mostly just him offering feedback.
According to White, their working relationship was successful for the first two seasons because they freely exchanged ideas. However, by the third season, Tapia de Veer no longer wanted to collaborate – he didn’t want to share his work, receive feedback, or even participate in recording sessions with White.
And, White added, “He’s definitely making a big deal out of just a creative difference.”

Jennifer Coolidge was happily surprised that Jon Gries, who played both Tanya’s intriguing love interest Greg in the first season and her scheming husband in the second, was willing to return for season three as the villainous widower, Gary. However, Gries has indicated that, to his knowledge, his character’s romantic storyline is finished.
However, that’s what he thought last time.
He told The Hollywood Reporter that while he doesn’t plan on returning, he’s not entirely sure. After the third season concluded with Gary’s secret still hidden, he added that he always considers each departure to be permanent.
Despite the exciting idea of completely resetting the cast each season – as White joked to The New Yorker, imagining being able to “burn down the house and start building again” – the show has demonstrated that as long as a character isn’t actually dead…
Mike White consistently keeps everyone guessing with his creative choices,” said actor Jeremy Allen White to The Hollywood Reporter. “I didn’t expect to be involved in the second season, and the same was true for the third. He always adds unexpected twists. I’d definitely be interested in returning, but I’m not sure if my character’s story has fully played out yet.”

Unless the show creates a prequel story or explores alternate universes, it’s unlikely Jennifer Coolidge will reprise her role as Tanya except through flashbacks or dream sequences. Despite her character’s death in the season two finale – revealed as the mystery body after being the only returning character from season one – fans have still held out hope for her return.
White has acknowledged feeling Tanya’s absence, but understands why Coolidge chose to eliminate her – despite her good intentions, naiveté, and immense wealth.
Coolidge described White as someone who stands by his choices, speaking on TopMob News in January 2023 after the season finale. She said he’s a great friend, but he had decided on a dramatic and over-the-top ending for The White Lotus 2, and ultimately wanted his character, Tanya, to be the one to make that sacrifice.
She confirmed to The New Yorker that she wouldn’t be returning for the third season, filmed in Thailand, stating, “I don’t think Tanya’s ever coming back, so I have to accept that.”
