House of the Dragon star Simon Russell Beale forced to drop out of Shakespeare run following cancer diagnosis

Sir Simon Russell Beale had to withdraw from a production of Titus Andronicus because he was diagnosed with colon cancer.

The actor, known for his role as Ser Simon Strong in the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, had to leave a Royal Shakespeare Company play just two weeks before it was scheduled to open at the Hampstead Theatre in London last September.

I was really surprised to hear that James Beale was leaving his role as the lead! He was fantastic during the run at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon earlier this year – April through June. They said it was due to health reasons, but haven’t given any more details, which is a bit worrying. I hope he’s okay.

Beale recently shared that he was diagnosed with colon cancer shortly after finishing work on House of the Dragon. He had to be hospitalized immediately after wrapping up the project.

The actor recently revealed he’s sharing some news, telling guests at a London event at The Delaunay restaurant that he’s excited about a particular production – describing it as ‘fantastic’ for those who haven’t yet seen it.

It was quite a journey for him, really. First, he was performing in Stratford, taking on the role in Titus Andronicus, and then he landed a part in House of the Dragon. But shortly after, he became seriously ill and ended up needing hospital treatment, where they discovered he had colon cancer. It’s just… a lot to take in, seeing someone go through all of that.

The past eight months have been challenging and a little disappointing. It’s been difficult adjusting to stepping back from commitments, something I haven’t experienced before.

I was really disappointed to leave the show ‘Titus’ – it was fantastic. That experience made me hesitant to join the production at Hampstead. Right now, I’m at a point where I’m wondering if I should take another chance, but I’ve decided to go for it and I’m starting rehearsals again next week.

The actor announced he will be the narrator for a UK tour of Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis, directed by Greg Doran, this summer.

The show will feature Beale telling the story, supported by puppeteers and live music.

After leaving the production of Titus Andronicus in September, Beale was succeeded in the main role by actor John Hodgkinson.

The RSC and Hampstead Theatre announced that Simon Russell Beale has withdrawn from their production of Titus Andronicus due to illness, so he can focus on getting better.

John Hodgkinson will be taking on the role of Titus Andronicus, starting September 15th.

“Simon Russell Beale wishes John and the company all the very best for the run.”

Besides his work on House of the Dragon, the actor has appeared in films like My Week with Marilyn, Mary Queen of Scots, and The Death of Stalin.

He’s performed in many Shakespeare plays on stage, such as The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, and Twelfth Night.
