Racing games have come in many forms over the years, ranging from the over-the-top action of the Mario Kart series to the realistic simulations of Gran Turismo. Both franchises have significantly influenced the gaming world, inspiring countless imitators. However, even after 25 years, no game – not even a new Gran Turismo title – has managed to achieve the same level of success.

As a huge racing game fan, I still remember how blown away I was when Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec came out for the PlayStation 2. It wasn’t just a best-selling game, everyone loved it! Even now, it’s regularly called one of the greatest racing games ever made. Honestly, it kind of defined what the PS2 was all about. And after 25 years, I still think it’s one of the best we’ve ever seen.

How Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec Took Over The World

Man, I still remember when Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec first came out! It launched in Japan in April 2001, and then hit the rest of the world that summer. It’s seriously one of the best racing games ever made. The Gran Turismo series had already started a few years before that, and it quickly became known for how realistic it felt – the handling, the graphics, everything. The first two games were awesome, and actually, the very first Gran Turismo still has the highest score on Metacritic – a whopping 96 out of 100!

Close behind in terms of critical acclaim is Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, which also received excellent reviews when it launched on the PlayStation 2 in 2001. It scores just one point lower than the original Gran Turismo on MetaCritic. Kazunori Yamauchi, the lead developer of the previous games, continued to refine the series, focusing on a more realistic driving experience. This was particularly noticeable with the Logitech GT Force steering wheel, which Yamauchi helped create. The PlayStation 2’s improved hardware allowed the developers to significantly enhance the game’s graphics.

Although the upgraded graphics meant players had fewer cars to choose from, there were still nearly 200 vehicles available, including many famous models like the Aston Martin. Critics weren’t quite as enthusiastic as they had been with the original game, but Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec was released early in the PlayStation 2’s lifespan and showcased the console’s capabilities. Compared to the pixelated graphics of the PlayStation, this version of Gran Turismo was a hit with a whole generation of gamers. It ultimately sold over 14.8 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling console games ever and the second best-selling PS2 game, surpassed only by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Gran Turismo 3 Was One Of “THE” PS2 Games — And Why That Matters

Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec was the most popular game available only on the PlayStation 2. Though the PS2 launched with several exclusive characters like Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Tidus, and Sora, Gran Turismo 3 became just as synonymous with the console. It felt like everyone who owned a PS2 also owned this game. Its wide appeal and impressive graphics – which were better than anything seen on home consoles at the time – really showed off what the PS2 could do. This made it a key reason for people to buy the console, establishing the PS2 as the go-to choice for casual gamers in that generation.

Even though Nintendo’s GameCube and Microsoft’s original Xbox were solid consoles, the PlayStation 2 was by far the most popular. It was the console most people owned, and the huge success of Gran Turismo 3 – along with its continued availability as a ‘Greatest Hits’ title – kept players coming back for years. Interestingly, even when Gran Turismo 4 was released, it couldn’t match how popular Gran Turismo 3 remained. I specifically remember seeing Gran Turismo 3 at almost every gathering after the PS2 launched. It was a staple for PS2 owners, much like Mario Kart was for Nintendo fans or Halo was for Xbox players.

Gran Turismo 3 truly showcased the power of the PlayStation 2 and how much game development had advanced. Unlike many games at the time, it didn’t require players to become heroes or wizards – they simply enjoyed the thrill of driving fast cars. The game was a massive hit, proving the console’s wide appeal. Even five years later, its technical achievements and popularity were considered one of Sony’s biggest successes. It was a landmark racing game, and a quarter-century later, it still holds up. While franchises like Forza Horizon and newer Gran Turismo titles like Gran Turismo 7 have continued to innovate, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec remains a classic and a top contender in the racing genre.
