Regular Show Fans Don’t Have to Worry About New Cartoon Network Revival

Fans of Regular Show can rejoice! The beloved Cartoon Network series is returning this May with a new revival, Regular Show: The Lost Tapes. The original Regular Show ran for eight seasons and included a movie, concluding nine years ago. The new series will continue the story, picking up right where the original left off.

Before its Cartoon Network premiere on May 11th, Regular Show: The Lost Tapes provided critics with two episodes. While that’s not enough for a full review of the revival, it does allow for a first impression. Based on those episodes, it’s clear that fans of the original Regular Show can expect the same quality and humor they loved – the show hasn’t missed a beat.

What Even Is Regular Show: The Lost Tapes?

We watched two episodes designed to give us a taste of the new series without revealing major plot points. These episodes happen early in the season, so we haven’t gotten the full picture of what to expect, but they do give us a good idea. The episodes are set within the original Regular Show timeline, before the very last episode and before Mordecai and Rigby grew up. It’s not yet confirmed if all episodes will be like this, but the intention is to return to the show’s familiar style and time period.

“The Lost Tapes” title suggests these stories feel like unseen adventures from the original series. For instance, the episode “Coffee Wars” centers around Margaret and Eileen facing off against a new pop-up shop. This shop sells a strange food – a donut already dipped in coffee – and predictably, the conflict quickly escalates into a fantastical battle involving magical food experts.

This new series perfectly captures the playful energy and humor of the original Regular Show. It begins with an everyday situation that quickly escalates into something bizarre and unique to these characters and their wonderfully strange world. That unpredictable twist was always the heart of Regular Show (despite the name!), and it’s clear this revival will continue delivering those wild and imaginative adventures.

It’s hard to judge the quality of Regular Show: The Lost Tapes right now because we haven’t seen enough episodes to get a good feel for this new direction. Regular Show always relied on self-contained adventures and the relationship between Mordecai and Rigby. Plus, it feels like there’s a big reveal planned for the Cartoon Network revival that will tie everything together and make more sense once it’s released.

How Does the Regular Show Revival Look?

The way the episodes are presented hasn’t changed much. They still begin like the original series, but now include a “The Lost Tapes” title card along with the familiar Regular Show logo. The voice actors still deliver fantastic performances, but we haven’t seen all the beloved characters—like Skips and Benson—in the episodes shown to reviewers so far.

The show is genuinely funny, with jokes that land well and even offer some clever observations about today’s world, all while staying true to the original Regular Show style. We can expect Mordecai and Rigby to face plenty of amusing challenges, and the revival will also give other characters a chance to shine in their own storylines. The animation looks just like the classic series, with a slightly updated visual quality that isn’t distracting.

I’ve noticed the character designs still give them a lot of room to get really expressive and even a bit disturbing with some close-up shots – they don’t shy away from the gross-out humor. It feels like the show has gotten even more daring since the beginning. The original series wasn’t afraid to kill off minor characters in over-the-top ways, usually with an explosion, but one episode takes it to a new level. There’s a scene where someone is literally scrubbed clean in a dishwasher, leaving just a skeleton! It’s shockingly funny, but in a really cartoonish and over-the-top way.

It’s too early to give a full review of Regular Show: The Lost Tapes – we need to see more episodes first. However, what we’ve seen so far shows the revival is made with genuine care and a lot of fun. It feels like we’re slipping right back into the original series’ style after all this time, similar to the recent The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball revival on Hulu. It’s both a comforting throwback and feels like the start of something fresh and exciting.
