Netflix’s newest true crime documentary tells the disturbing story of Caroline Muirhead, a young forensic pathologist who found herself in an impossible situation.
In 2020, Muirhead started dating Alexander McKellar, who initially seemed like an ideal match. However, a surprising revelation soon altered everything.
Director Josh Allott was struck by Caroline Muirhead’s story, initially believing it sounded like something from a fictional drama, not a true account. He described her situation as almost impossible to comprehend, yet remarkably relatable, prompting anyone in a relationship to consider how they might react in a similar circumstance.
What did Alexander McKellar admit to Muirhead, and what happened to him? Keep reading to learn the details.
What did Alexander McKellar do?
In September 2017, Alexander McKellar drove while intoxicated and crashed into Tony Parsons, a 63-year-old cyclist.
While cycling 100 miles alone to raise money for charity, Parsons was hit by McKellar, but the impact didn’t kill him right away.
Alexander and his brother, Robert, drove away to conceal the car. They then returned and hid Parsons’s body in a pit where animal remains were discarded.
How was Alexander McKellar caught?

Three years after committing his crimes, McKellar was finally caught when he confessed to his girlfriend.
Caroline Muirhead asked McKellar if he had any secrets that might impact their relationship. He then revealed details about the accident and took her to the location where he and his brother had gotten rid of Parsons’ body and possessions.
Muirhead left a can of Red Bull in the area as a marker for the police to find.
The brothers were arrested in December 2020, and Parsons’ body was found in January 2021 for a forensic examination.
Where is Alexander McKellar now?
In August 2023, Alexander McKellar was found guilty of manslaughter and attempting to obstruct justice. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison and is currently serving that sentence.
Robert McKellar received a prison sentence of five years and three months after admitting he attempted to obstruct justice.
Ruth McQuaid, a prosecutor with Scotland’s Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, stated that these brothers were unsuccessful in their efforts to avoid facing justice.
These were terrible and carefully planned crimes that caused immense suffering to Mr. Parsons’ family – his wife, children, and grandchildren. They were left with the agonizing uncertainty of not knowing his fate or whereabouts.
Because Anthony was missing for several years and the subject of a large-scale investigation, his family had no information about where he was.
Okay, so here’s the really disturbing part of the story. While life went on as normal for Alexander and Robert McKellar, they were carrying this awful secret: they’d buried someone – a man – with the remains of dead animals. It’s a chilling thought, knowing they were going about their daily routines while harboring that knowledge. It completely messes with your head, imagining the weight of that deception.
They deliberately hid this information, ignoring the impact on Mr. Parsons’ family. We extend our deepest sympathy to everyone affected by the cruel and violent acts of these two individuals.
Alexander’s attorney, Brian McConnachie, told the court that his client is not a malicious person. He recognizes he made a grave mistake that caused immense pain to the Parsons family, and he deeply regrets his actions from September 2017. He wishes he could undo what he did, but it’s impossible to change the past.
