Layoffs and studio closures are always difficult to discuss, and unfortunately, they’re likely to continue happening as the gaming industry faces ongoing challenges.
I’m really excited because it sounds like Spiders is working on something new! If you don’t know them, they made both the GreedFall games and Steelrising. We actually really loved Steelrising when we reviewed it, even though it wasn’t perfect. And GreedFall: The Dying World was a pretty great RPG too – it built on what made the first GreedFall so good and definitely stood out. I’m hoping their next game is just as solid!
Unfortunately, the game studio Spiders has been forced to close down. Nacon, its parent company, couldn’t find a buyer after the studio ran into financial difficulties, and it’s now expected to be liquidated, resulting in the loss of around 70 jobs. Despite the disappointing news, the Spiders team appears to be handling the situation with resilience. Nacon Tech, another part of the company specializing in motion capture, has also been shut down.
