Ethan Hawke appeared in a fantastic, but often overlooked, Batman series that boasts one of the strongest casts of any DC show. While Superman is the classic superhero, Batman has arguably had a greater overall impact on DC Comics, films, television, and video games.
Over the years, there have been many actors playing Batman in movies. Soon, DC will actually have two different live-action Bruce Waynes appearing in films simultaneously. Despite speculation, Ethan Hawke has never played Batman and isn’t being considered for the role right now. Currently, Robert Pattinson, who stars in The Batman films, and a new actor chosen for James Gunn’s DC Universe are the two live-action Batmen.
Hawke’s connection to Batman expands the character’s presence into another well-loved format. Batman’s animated series are among DC’s most famous and highly regarded creations. For example, Batman: The Animated Series first introduced the character Harley Quinn, and the newer Batman: Caped Crusader reimagines Batman’s origins in 1940s Gotham.
Despite being a modern take, Batwheels – the animated Batman series from Hawke that ran for three seasons – keeps with the franchise’s tradition of trying new things. The show is about the Bat-Family’s vehicles, which are brought to life as characters, similar to the concept of Cars but with a Batman theme. What’s really impressive is the talented voice cast behind the show.
Batwheels’ Cast Mixes Live-Action And Animation Stars
Because Batwheels is designed for very young children and features a brighter, more colorful story than most Batman fans expect, it hasn’t become a major hit with the traditional Batman audience. Despite this, the show has been running steadily for three seasons, attracting some well-known voice actors. The latest episodes, Batwheels season 3C, will be available on HBO Max starting May 22nd.
The animated Batman series boasts a talented cast, including familiar faces from live-action films and renowned voice actors. Leading the series as Batman is Hawke, and other popular actors lending their voices include Xolo Maridueña (from the live-action Blue Beetle) as Snowy, Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) as Catwoman, the iconic Batman actor Adam West (using recordings from his archive) as A.D.A.M., and Zachary Gordon (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) as Nightwing.
The show features a fantastic group of veteran voice actors, including Tom Kenny (best known as SpongeBob SquarePants), James Arnold Taylor and Dee Bradley Baker from Star Wars: Clone Wars, Fred Tatasciore of the Bat-Family series, and Diedrich Bader, a frequent voice of Batman. This talented cast brings both familiar and versatile performances to the beloved characters in Batwheels, adding a special touch to the show.
Ethan Hawke Shows He Has What It Takes To Play Batman In Live-Action
Having successfully voiced Batman for animated shows for many years, Hawke has proven he can handle the role in a live-action setting. He faces a unique challenge: portraying the character with the serious and reserved tone fans are used to, while also fitting into the lighthearted and colorful world of a Bat-Family spinoff series that features talking vehicles.
The role requires an actor who can balance darkness and heroism, and Ethan Hawke has demonstrated that ability effortlessly, making him a strong contender for a live-action Batman. He’s capable of portraying both a realistic and a more imaginative version of the character, and he already has a solid track record in live-action roles. While he probably won’t be Batman in the upcoming The Brave and the Bold film, his work on Batwheels could pave the way for him to play the role in a future live-action project, especially considering the multiverse possibilities introduced by Peacemaker season 2.
