Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from Episode 7 of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. The latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again heavily suggests a hero first appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Phase 3 is about to return. While it once appeared Marvel Studios was distancing itself from characters introduced in the Netflix series The Defenders Saga, it now seems they were simply waiting for the right moment to reintroduce them.
Charlie Cox first reprised his role as Daredevil for the MCU, paving the way for other heroes from The Defenders Saga to rejoin the universe and officially establishing those shows as part of the MCU storyline. Now, season two of Daredevil: Born Again will feature another key star from that saga: Krysten Ritter returning as Jessica Jones.
Jessica Jones reappeared in season 2, episode 6 of Daredevil: Born Again, and again in episode 7. Her return revealed she’s now a mother to Danielle, her daughter with Luke Cage, mirroring their comic book relationship. Since becoming a mother, Jessica’s superpowers have become unreliable, adding a new challenge for the character.
In the seventh episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, a significant detail about Luke Cage is revealed. Jessica confronts Mr. Charles and learns that Luke was the friend who took a job offer from him, and is currently working for him abroad.
Luke Cage Working For Mr. Charles Makes A Lot Of Sense
Season 2 of Luke Cage is the last time we’ve seen the hero take a major role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, aside from a quick appearance in the final episode of Jessica Jones. At the end of his own series, Luke made a controversial choice, taking over Harlem’s Paradise and attempting to control crime. It felt like he was making a difficult bargain to protect his community. This explains why he’d later agree to work with a mysterious government agent like Mr. Charles – he’s still trying to keep Harlem safe, even if it means making questionable alliances.
Similar to Jessica, Luke should have sensed that Mr. Charles wasn’t someone to trust. But by partnering with him, Luke would achieve a similar goal to taking control of Harlem’s Paradise, only on a much grander scale. It’s also been a while since we’ve seen Luke Cage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it’s unclear how much he’s changed. He might easily fall back into his old habits of quietly fighting crime and using force when necessary.
Luke Cage Is Set Up To Play A Major Role In Daredevil: Born Again Season 3
A recent mention of Luke Cage in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again strongly suggests his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is imminent. With seven years having passed since his last appearance in Phase 3, and with the introductions of Wilson Fisk and the return of Jessica Jones, fans are anticipating Luke Cage’s comeback. While it’s unclear if he’ll appear this season, it has been confirmed he’ll be back next year. This is further supported by sightings of Mike Colter (Luke Cage) and Finn Jones (Iron Fist) on the set of Daredevil: Born Again season 3, hinting at a reunion of The Defenders.
Marvel Studios appears to be reuniting the superhero team from the old Netflix shows – The Defenders – within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recent set photos suggest Jessica Jones, along with Luke Cage and Iron Fist, will appear in the upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again” series. The show seems poised to explore the existing dynamic between Luke Cage and Jessica Jones – specifically Luke’s work with Mr. Charles and Jessica’s disapproval – as well as Luke’s character development since his previous series. It looks like Luke Cage will have a significant role in the new season.
