Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trilogy Won’t Bring Large Changes to Story, Says Director

With the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth approaching on Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2, director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed the third Final Fantasy 7 Remake game will closely follow the original story. He told Comicbook that maintaining the integrity of the original Final Fantasy 7’s narrative was a top priority during development.

Hamaguchi explained that a key to the remake’s success is trusting the original story writer, Kazushige Nojima. While the core story won’t be altered significantly, the team is slightly rearranging events. With the improved graphics, some scenes would seem unrealistic if presented in the original order, so these changes ensure everything feels believable.

I completely trust Kazushige Nojima’s story, and I won’t change it based on my own opinions. However, because the remakes look so much more realistic now, following the original game’s timing and events exactly can sometimes feel awkward or unbelievable.

If shifts in time or dates don’t seem believable, it can disconnect players from the story and their emotional connection to it.

To avoid problems with the story, Hamaguchi said the development team would carefully consider each plot point. They’d discuss whether more explanation or setup was needed to create the same emotional impact as the original Final Fantasy 7.

Hamaguchi explained that the focus wasn’t on altering the story itself, but on making sure the player’s feelings developed at the right speed alongside the game’s timeline. He admitted this meant repeatedly reviewing scenes, and it was something the development team paid very close attention to.

Square Enix hasn’t shared much about Final Fantasy Remake Part 3, but in a recent interview, Hamaguchi mentioned the team is now starting to prepare for the game’s official reveal, after confirming development is going well.

We can’t share specific details just yet, but development is going well and on track. We’re aiming for a strong release that will complete the story started in the previous two games. We know fans are excited, and we’re getting ready to make an announcement soon, so please be patient!

This year, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade became available on Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2, and the second game in the series will follow on June 3rd. A demo is currently available on both platforms, letting players experience some of the game’s content.
