EastEnders airs emotional Phil Mitchell scenes in the wake of Nigel Bates’s death in early BBC iPlayer release

EastEnders fans were saddened today by the news of Nigel Bates’s (played by Paul Bradley) passing, which was revealed in the latest episode.

Bradley returned to the role in December 2024 after a 26-year break, and it soon became clear he wasn’t being honest about something.

He finally told his old friend, Phil Mitchell, about his early-onset dementia, and they quickly became close again, like when they were kids. Phil promised to support Nigel as his condition got worse, but eventually Nigel had to move into a care home. Phil felt he’d let his friend down and didn’t join the others in visiting him.

When Grant Mitchell returned to Walford, he worried his brother was struggling again with his mental health. He became even more concerned when he found Phil searching the beach for a particular stone that Nigel had requested.

He helped his friend say goodbye, and they traveled to the care home together, though the journey wasn’t easy. Eventually, Phil managed to get a ride on the back of a pizza delivery scooter and was with Julie Bates (also known as Karen Henthorn) when his friend passed away.

As the sun came up, Julie and her companion stayed at the building. Julie explained she was ready to go, now that her husband was gone. While she cherished their memories together, she’d come to terms with his passing.

Kat Moon and her family quickly organized a memorial gathering in Albert Square, inviting residents to watch a comedy film that Arthur had produced last Christmas. Julie appreciated the thoughtful tribute, but Phil watched from a distance and eventually went home. There, he looked into his empty living room, staring at the armchair where he’d spent countless hours.

He glanced at the portrait of Nigel above the fireplace, and a determination washed over him to show everyone he wouldn’t fail this time. He grabbed a lighter, carried all the furniture outside, and set it on fire.

Grant’s family watched with worry, but he understood why Phil was acting the way he was. He encouraged everyone to come inside and celebrate Nigel’s life with a spontaneous party. They shared stories about Nigel, and when Grant remembered Nigel’s fun-loving days in the 1970s, everyone jumped up to dance.

Instead of the typical Thames and EastEnders theme music, the closing credits featured a picture of Phil and Nigel accompanied by a song from The Jam.
