Batman is DC Comics’ most resilient hero, dedicating years to perfecting his physical and mental strength to fight crime. Through intense training, he’s achieved a level of ability beyond that of an ordinary human, allowing him to take on even superpowered villains. While he sometimes uses advanced technology like specialized armor or weapons against his strongest opponents, he primarily relies on his skills and training. Batman consistently faces enemies of all power levels and typically prevails, proving he’s a formidable protector of Gotham who can withstand even the most powerful attacks.
Despite his incredible abilities, Batman is still vulnerable. He faces numerous enemies who are often just as capable, and sometimes even more powerful. These villains know how to target his weaknesses, and have managed to inflict serious injuries on him. Here are seven DC villains who have defeated Batman, giving him some truly brutal beatings.
7) The Black Glove

Grant Morrison’s Batman stories are truly exceptional. The overall arc can be divided into three parts, and the first culminated in Batman being outsmarted by a new group of villains known as the Black Glove. Led by the enigmatic Dr. Hurt, the Black Glove included characters like Cardinal Maggi, Sir Anthony, General Malenkov, Al-Khidr, and Senator Vine. They were obsessed with a disturbing pattern of destruction and renewal in Gotham City, and secretly orchestrated events to create a devastating trap for Batman. This trap left him broken – both physically and emotionally – reducing him to a homeless man struggling with addiction. The experience ultimately forced Batman to rebuild himself, emerging even stronger than before.
6) Ra’s al Ghul

Ra’s al Ghul is a major enemy of Batman, consistently challenging and defeating him over the years. Centuries of combat experience, combined with the restorative Lazarus Pits which grant him enhanced strength, speed, and agility, make him an incredibly dangerous opponent. Few villains have bested Batman in battle as often as Ra’s al Ghul, a master swordsman who has even defeated and resurrected Batman multiple times, continuing their ongoing conflict.
5) Perpetua

Perpetua is an incredibly powerful villain in the DC Universe, far exceeding most others in scope. As a member of the Hand, a group capable of creating entire universes, she actually built the DC Multiverse as a tool to control everything. However, her own sons – the Monitor, Anti-Monitor, and World-Forger – rebelled and helped the Hand defeat her, imprisoning her beyond the Source Wall. When that barrier was broken during a battle with Barbatos, she escaped and repeatedly clashed with the Justice League. At one point, she even conquered the multiverse, killing Batman in the process, which led to his resurrection using a Black Lantern ring.
4) Reverse Flash

Reverse Flash is a hugely dangerous villain, but he usually focuses his attacks on Barry Allen, leaving other heroes alone. However, he once ended up in Batman’s Batcave. There, Reverse Flash used his incredible speed to quickly and brutally attack Batman, hitting him repeatedly. Batman only managed to survive by throwing batarangs at Reverse Flash’s feet, which slowed him down just enough to land a powerful kick. Even so, it was a fierce and nearly fatal beating for Batman.
3) Darkseid

Darkseid is a supremely powerful villain and one of the most dangerous beings in the DC Universe, far beyond the typical threats Batman faces. While Batman fights alongside the Justice League and occasionally clashes with Darkseid, the results are usually one-sided, with Darkseid easily defeating the Caped Crusader. Batman often prepares with specialized equipment, but little can stand up to Darkseid’s immense power. Most famously, Darkseid once blasted Batman with the Omega Beams, sending him hurtling through time. Batman may have the strategy, but Darkseid has the raw strength.
2) Bane

Bane is considered one of Batman’s most formidable enemies, consistently challenging and defeating the hero since his introduction. He transformed himself into a dangerous fighter while imprisoned in Santa Prisca, and became even more powerful with the use of Venom. Bane matches Batman in skill and has inflicted significant damage, famously breaking Batman’s back and forcing him to temporarily leave Gotham. He’s one of the few villains to achieve such a level of success against the Dark Knight.
1) The Joker

The Joker is Batman’s most dangerous and unpredictable enemy, and their conflict constantly threatens Gotham City. They’ve clashed many times over the years, with the Joker consistently managing to inflict serious damage on Batman. He’s even come close to killing Batman on several occasions, famously succeeding in the story arc “Endgame.” Their fights are uniquely intense, with both constantly trying to harm the other.
