Console announcements usually happen at big events like the Xbox showcase or The Game Awards. But Project Helix was different – it was just revealed after a lot of online speculation. We don’t know when it will be released, but Microsoft has promised it will be able to play all your current Xbox and PC games.
Since the initial announcement, more details have been surfacing, but Microsoft plans to share a comprehensive update on Xbox development on May 7th. Hosted by Chris Charla, Portfolio and Programs General Manager, and Jason Ronald, VP of Next Generation, the update will provide a detailed look at Project Helix and its vision for the future of Xbox.
Don’t expect a complete unveiling, but the pair will likely talk about everything shared at GDC, including the Xbox development kits. Xbox previously stated these kits would be sent to game studios in 2027. They’ve hinted the new console will offer ways to improve how games are built, boost performance, and speed up the development process, so we might get a few more details during the update.
Rumors suggest Microsoft’s Project Helix is still planned to release globally around the 2027 holiday season, potentially going up against Sony’s PlayStation 6 and a possible handheld version of it. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has mentioned that increasing costs for memory chips might affect the price and how readily available the new console will be.
