Gurei launches July 23 for PC, later for consoles

The action game Gurei, inspired by chanbara films, will be available on PC through Steam starting July 23rd. Astrolabe Games and Lobo Sagaz Studio also announced that it will be released on consoles sometime after that.

About

Gurei is a tough but rewarding action game developed by Lobo Sagaz Studio. Inspired by classic Japanese samurai movies, it boasts beautiful, hand-drawn visuals and smooth animations. The game’s combat is carefully crafted, offering players a wide range of attacks to learn and responsive controls, all adding up to a thrilling and satisfying action experience.

Setting

Rei, the player character, must defeat powerful nature spirits called Kami to gain their abilities. The game doesn’t offer much guidance, encouraging players to explore and overcome challenges in a beautifully hand-drawn world that’s visually and thematically gray.

Dynamic Difficulty

You can challenge the Kami in any order you like. The game adjusts difficulty based on the path you choose, so even a Kami you fight early on could become a final boss if you take a different route. It’s probably best not to save the toughest Kami for last!

Combat Features

In addition to standard moves like sword attacks, dodges, and stomps, Rei gains a unique new ability after defeating each Kami. These skills will expand your combat options, offering things like a more powerful dash, weapons to finish off enemies, healing powers, and much more!

You have complete control over how you play. Each enemy has its own unique behavior, and defeating them unlocks new abilities. This lets you tackle challenges in many different ways. It won’t be simple, but you can always experiment with new strategies and change your approach.

Beyond the Brawl

Gurei is an action game where you battle powerful foes, but it offers much more than just combat. The story unfolds in a bizarre castle that exists between the worlds of the living and the spirits, inhabited by Kami – figures from Japanese mythology. With each enemy you defeat, the protagonist, Rei, draws closer to the spirit realm and meets these strange characters. They’ll enrich your adventure with their stories, unusual animations, optional challenges, and hidden secrets.

Unlikely “Friends”

As you play, you’ll encounter various powerful spirits called Kami. When Rei defeats a Kami, she gains their power and a bit of their personality! These defeated spirits travel with Rei, offering their thoughts and opinions. They can be helpful, providing insights into the game’s story and how things work, but sometimes their comments will be… less than useful. Get ready for a lively journey!
