Netflix is making a bold move by changing things up with one of its most popular shows. However, this risk could pay off handsomely. The planned prequel sounds promising and is expected to please existing fans while also attracting new viewers. According to someone involved in the production, Netflix and the show’s creators have been discussing this spin-off for a while and have recently reached a final agreement.
So, what’s this new show about? It’s a prequel to The Crown, which told the story of Queen Elizabeth II’s life and reign. The challenge is that it will cover the reigns of several different monarchs. The series begins after the death of Queen Victoria and ends with the wedding of Princess Elizabeth in 1947. This means we’ll see stories about Queen Victoria, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI, and a young Princess Elizabeth Windsor before she became queen.
This is Great for Netflix, as Good Historical Fiction is in Short Supply
Peter Morgan, the creator of the series, recently told The Hollywood Reporter that while he doesn’t plan to cover recent events anytime soon, he isn’t finished with the story overall. It seems he’s now getting the opportunity to continue, as he’s returning to the production with a script in development and casting expected to begin next year. Morgan explained that exploring the past allows him to comment on the present in a more subtle and nuanced way, which he believes is a better approach.
The first two seasons of The Crown tell the story of Queen Elizabeth II’s early life and reign, from her childhood and the unexpected path to becoming queen, through her marriage and the beginning of her family. Claire Foy and Matt Smith brilliantly portray Elizabeth and Prince Philip during this period. Later seasons cover the rest of her time as queen, including the heartbreaking death of Princess Diana and the resulting scandal for the royal family. The Crown is one of Netflix’s most popular and critically acclaimed shows, so the new seasons have a lot to live up to. However, the original creator, who previously captivated audiences for years, is well-equipped to deliver another compelling story.
