Fullmetal Alchemist’s Successor Refuses to Tell Its Story the Normal Way, Writer Says

As a fan of Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist, I’ve been really looking forward to the new anime, and it sounds like it’s going to be great! The writer, Noboru Takagi, recently shared that viewers can expect a lot of excitement.

In a recent interview with Febri, Takagi discussed the making of the show, revealing how decisions were made about the length of the first season and the show’s overall mood. He emphasized that what makes Daemons of the Shadow Realm so enjoyable to watch is its unique and unexpected elements.

Noboru Takagi Masters the Art of Keeping Fans Guessing in Daemons of the Shadow Realm

Takagi shared in a recent interview that he was unexpectedly invited by Bones to work on Daemons of the Shadow Realm after writing the screenplay for Metallic Rouge (2024). He expressed his surprise, honor, and happiness about the opportunity.

Takagi began the interview by discussing what he finds so compelling about the central idea of balance in the story. He explained that many action or supernatural narratives prioritize those elements, making everyday life feel secondary. However, in Daemons of the Shadow Realm, he emphasizes, ordinary life and the extraordinary are always given equal weight.

Takagi recently discussed how Daemons of the Shadow Realm strikes a good balance in its storytelling. This comes after the release of two popular anime that show a common trend: either packing stories with too much action and supernatural power (particularly in anime aimed at young men), or focusing too heavily on everyday life. While Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 is well-received, its slower pace and focus on slice-of-life moments might not appeal to all fantasy fans.

According to Takagi, Daemons of the Shadow Realm skillfully blends lighthearted and intense moments. The story immediately focuses on the idea of duality, starting with a scene of a mother giving birth to twins whose destinies are linked to day and night.

When asked about staying true to the source material, Takagi explained that the production team is dedicated to adapting the manga accurately. They always intended to remain faithful to the original, so they didn’t feel the need to deviate much. Takagi also emphasized that when adapting a beloved work, they feel a strong responsibility to capture what makes it special and share it with a wide audience, and that’s their top priority, even when facing limitations.

Takagi, the creator of Daemons of the Shadow Realm, says the most difficult part of making the story was its unconventional structure. It doesn’t follow a straight-line plot; instead, the world and story expand outwards in multiple directions, creating a uniquely complex design.

Takagi explained that a big challenge was figuring out where to end each episode. He was very focused on keeping viewers engaged, always striving for those moments that leave people wanting more. He said, “I’ve always been particular about ‘hooks.’ I’m happy if viewers are left thinking, ‘What happens next?'” The cliffhanger at the end of Episode 1 of Daemons of the Shadow Realm is a perfect example of this approach.

I’m seriously hyped for what’s coming in Daemons of the Shadow Realm! Takagi has hinted at some huge twists and turns before the season wraps up, and it sounds amazing. Apparently, even the creators don’t fully know where Yuru and Asa’s story is headed! What’s really cool is how everything is built around opposing forces – the title ‘Tsugai’ (meaning ‘pair’), the themes of sealing and release, even their names ‘night’ and ‘morning’ all point to that. Takagi thinks we’re going to see a lot of conflict and harmony colliding in really complex ways, and honestly, I can’t wait to see how it all plays out!

The new anime series will have 24 episodes and stream on Crunchyroll starting April 4, 2026. It’s created by the author of the popular manga Fullmetal Alchemist. Given the success of the Fullmetal Alchemist anime adaptations, this new series, Daemons of the Shadow Realm, looks promising.
