15 Years Later, Beloved Shonen Jump Character Returns to The Main Story

Katsura Hoshino’s popular manga, D.Gray-man, first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2004, but the author’s health issues caused frequent breaks in publication. In 2018, it moved to Jump SQ. Rise and began releasing new chapters only four times a year, significantly slowing down the story’s progress. This infrequent release schedule, combined with delays in digital and translated versions, makes it harder for international fans to follow the series. Despite these challenges, D.Gray-man remains beloved for its imaginative world, distinctive power system, beautiful artwork, and engaging plot. The story takes place in a world where, long ago, certain individuals received divine power—the ability to use “Innocence,” sacred objects that can destroy artificial creatures created by the villain known as the Millennium Earl, called Akuma.

The Millennium Earl is determined to destroy both humanity and the Innocence, powerful weapons that can defeat his creatures. He also plans to recreate a devastating event from the past, throwing the world into chaos, and is opposed by an organization called the Black Order. Over time, the story has focused on Allen Walker’s journey to understand who he truly is. Fans were shocked when the popular character Lavi fell into a long sleep over 15 years ago (back in Chapter 202). Now, Lavi has finally returned in Chapter 258, which came out in the Spring 2026 issue of Jump SQ. Rise magazine.

Who Is Lavi in D.Gray-man?

Fans already suspected this character would return, hinted at by the cover of the Autumn 2025 issue of Jump SQ. Rise magazine, which showed Allen Walker and Lavi. Lavi is the name he’s currently using, but his true identity remains a mystery in the manga. He was introduced early in the story and quickly became a fan favorite. Even after disappearing from the manga for several years, his popularity never faded. As an exorcist working for the Black Order, Lavi has a unique role: he’s the current successor to the Bookman Clan, a group that has spent centuries secretly recording and preserving the world’s true history.

Lavi’s role was to document events without getting involved, meaning he needed to remain impartial. However, he found it difficult to stay neutral as he became close to Allen Walker and the others at the Black Order’s Marian Unit, even though his mentor constantly reminded him to do so. Furthermore, his unique Innocence, manifested as a hammer, made him a powerful fighter, allowing him to defeat enemies and protect his friends.

You can read the manga officially on platforms like Viz and the Shonen Jump app, which currently has 245 translated chapters. An anime series first aired in 2006, running for 103 episodes until 2008 when production halted because there wasn’t enough source material. In 2016, a sequel called D.Gray-man: Hallow was released, but after 13 episodes, it wasn’t renewed for another season.
