Skeletor, the iconic villain from Masters of the Universe, is a huge reason the franchise is so popular. He’s constantly trying to take over Eternia and has almost succeeded on several occasions. A new Masters of the Universe series will delve into Skeletor’s origins, revealing how he became the character fans know and love. You can get a sneak peek below.
Mattel and Dark Horse Comics are launching a 12-issue comic book series called Masters of the Universe: Genesis. The series will delve into the history of Eternia, focusing on the backstories of beloved characters. The first story arc will center on Skeletor, and will be written by Rich Douek, illustrated by Gavin Smith, colored by Fabi Marques, and lettered by AndWorld Design. The first issue will have a main cover by Mark Buckingham and a variant cover by Lee Bermejo, both of which you can see below.

Masters of the Universe Has Never Fully Explored Skeletor’s Origin Story

Skeletor’s backstory is surprisingly unclear. Over the years, different versions of his origins have been presented, but none have fully explained his early life. The original cartoon showed him coming from another world, while the 2002 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe reboot revealed he was once named Keldor, who was transformed into Skeletor after an accident involving acid.
The DC comics in 2012 further developed Skeletor’s backstory, establishing him as the rightful heir to the throne of Eternia, but one who was overlooked in favor of Randor by King Miro. Later, in Masters of the Universe Revelation, the story added another layer: Prince Keldor learned magic from Hordak and received the Havoc Staff, which disfigured him and ultimately gave him the skeletal appearance we know today.
While there are several interesting stories about Skeletor’s past, they often lack specific details and aren’t officially part of the established storyline. The new comic, Masters of the Universe: Genesis, might finally fill in those gaps, but it remains to be seen just how far back it will explore his origins. Here’s the official description of the issue.
