The biggest question hanging over the final season of The Boys is: who will finally stop Homelander? While it seems inevitable that Antony Starr’s character will be defeated somehow – even if not killed – figuring out how and who will do it remains the central mystery. Several characters could potentially rise to the challenge, with Billy and Ryan Butcher being strong contenders. Soldier Boy is another possibility, though he’s currently aligned with his son. However, a recent development introduces a new, compelling candidate. Warning: Spoilers ahead for Season 5, Episode 5 of The Boys!
While Soldier Boy doesn’t seem dangerous at the moment, Sister Sage poses a real threat to Homelander. Since appearing in Season 4 of The Boys, she’s become vital to Vought’s operations, using her incredible intelligence to create and carry out Homelander’s plans.
However, her priorities have changed. She doesn’t want anyone to win, especially Homelander. Her plan is to stop him from obtaining V-One, allowing the virus that kills Supes to spread and trigger a massive conflict between humans and Supes. She intends to survive this war in a bunker, hoping to emerge and finally live a peaceful life.
Sister Sage’s Plan Was Set Up In Gen V Season 2

In Season 5, Episode 5 of The Boys, Sage finally shares her plan with Ashley, though hints of it have been building for a while. I first suspected something was coming together when Sister Sage appeared in Season 2 of Gen V. There, she developed a relationship with Thomas Godolkin, but ultimately had to betray him, leading to his ruin. While she seemed to genuinely care for him, she had to do it because he became unpredictable and uncontrollable.
Sage’s actions showed she could easily change sides if it benefited her, and explained why she tolerated Homelander for so long. Her behavior in Season 4 of The Boys now makes sense – she was secretly planning against him all along. Sage never agreed with Homelander’s beliefs; she was motivated by her own intelligence, a sense of boredom, and a pessimistic view of the world. Now that he believes he’s a god, she’s working to defeat him, all while managing to stay out of the messy parts of the conflict.
Sister Sage vs. Homelander: Who Is Going To Win?

Planning against Homelander is one thing, but actually succeeding is much harder. As seen in The Boys Season 5, Episode 4, Sister Sage faces a huge challenge. She managed to get Soldier Boy to join Homelander’s search for V-One at Fort Harmony, hoping Soldier Boy would turn against his son and prevent him from obtaining it – and that was her goal. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as planned. They didn’t find V-One, but they did learn who has it. For now, Soldier Boy is still helping Homelander, although I suspect that might not last.
Ashley might be helpful as a tool, but I doubt she’ll stay safe for long, especially considering how unpredictable things are – Homelander killing Firecracker proves that. If he suspects she’s betraying him, doesn’t trust him, or even just decides she’s no longer needed, he could easily kill her. Godolkin’s willingness to take risks also shows she can’t predict impulsive actions, and no one is more impulsive than Homelander.
Sage’s plan, while intending good, is actually deeply flawed and would likely result in total destruction – both humans and Supes would be wiped out. Surprisingly, Homelander is now the best hope for preventing that outcome, even though he’d still need to be stopped eventually. Sage’s idea is a point of no return. This twist significantly raises the stakes for Season 5 of The Boys, and with only three episodes left, we’ll soon see how it all unfolds.
