Marvel Studios is reportedly planning to create a team of prominent Asian superheroes, and there are several strong contenders for the lineup. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe faced early criticism for a lack of diversity, films like Black Panther and Captain Marvel proved audiences were eager for more inclusive stories. Marvel has made significant progress in this area recently, with Asian heroes playing an increasingly important role.
Although Asian characters have made appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before, the 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings truly showcased an Asian hero as a major force. Now, rumors are circulating about a potential team of Asian superheroes inspired by the War of the Realms comic event from 2019. Even if this doesn’t happen right away, there are already several characters within the MCU who could form the basis of an Agents of Atlas team.
Shang-Chi Is One of the MCU’s Most Powerful Characters
The 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings launched Simu Liu into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Shang-Chi, a character originally from Marvel Comics’ Master of Kung Fu. The movie showed how Shang-Chi was trained in martial arts by his long-lived father, Xu Wenwu (played by Tony Leung), who possessed ten powerful rings. Shang-Chi fled his father during a dangerous mission, but they eventually met again, along with allies like Katy (Awkwafina), Xu Xialing (Meng’er Zhang), and Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), ultimately leading Shang-Chi to claim the ten rings for himself.
Shang-Chi’s development positions him as one of the strongest heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not just among Asian characters, but overall. This makes him a strong possibility to join – or even lead – the rumored Agents of Atlas team in a future sequel. We could see his allies Katy and potentially his sister Xialing return, though Xialing’s fate is uncertain as she now possesses the Ten Rings and could become an enemy.
Ms. Marvel Is a Mutant in the MCU
Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani, is a groundbreaking character as the first Muslim superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She gains incredible powers – the ability to create objects made of light – after discovering and wearing a special bangle that once belonged to her grandmother, Aisha (Mehwish Hayat). This bangle, a Quantum Band, not only gives her powers but also connects her to her family’s history and a hidden dimension called the Noor Dimension, while also opening up a world of possibilities involving mutants and the X-Men.
With the introduction of new heroes like Kate Bishop and Cassie Lang, the future of the MCU’s young hero teams looks bright. It would be great to see Ms. Marvel, a powerful and important South Asian superhero, team up with Shang-Chi as part of the Agents of Atlas. Her abilities, and the potential of the Quantum Bands, deserve further exploration in live-action movies and shows.
Wong Is the MCU’s Most Formidable Sorcerer
Many fans associate the title of Sorcerer Supreme with Doctor Strange, but in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s actually Wong who currently holds it. He previously worked at Target and served as a librarian at Kamar-Taj before being promoted during the Blip. As the MCU’s most powerful Master of the Mystic Arts, Wong is a strong contender to join the Agents of Atlas.
Wong has met Shang-Chi and Katy before, and it appears he’s been gathering other heroes and villains since then. This might be leading to him becoming the leader of the Agents of Atlas, making him an even bigger player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because we don’t know much about Wong’s life before Doctor Strange, giving him a more central role could allow the MCU to explore his past.
Jimmy Woo Proved He Was More Than a Joke in WandaVision
We first encountered FBI agent Jimmy Woo while he was monitoring Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) during his house arrest following the events of Captain America: Civil War. At that time, Woo was often the target of Lang’s playful deception. But in the 2021 series WandaVision, Jimmy Woo returned as a much stronger character, demonstrating his ability to stand up to superiors, his quick fighting skills, and his calm demeanor even in stressful situations.
In Marvel comics, Jimmy Woo is responsible for bringing together all versions of the Agents of Atlas, including both the original team and the 2019 Asian-focused lineup. Because of this, it wouldn’t feel right to have an MCU version of the team without him. Despite lacking superpowers, Jimmy Woo is a valuable fighter, and his role as an FBI agent could give the Agents of Atlas more credibility. Randall Park is a talented actor and deserves a bigger part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Several of the MCU’s Eternals Are Asian in Appearance
Despite not being originally from Asia – they were created by the cosmic being Arishem – these Eternals have Asian appearances, making them potentially great additions to an Agents of Atlas team. Sersi and Kingo, who both appeared as Asian individuals while guiding humanity’s growth on Earth, would be particularly strong members, even though Gilgamesh is no longer available.
Despite receiving praise after its release, the movie left fans wanting more. The ending suggests a potential return for some incredibly powerful characters, and many would welcome that. Specifically, Sersi, with her ability to change matter, and Kingo, who can shoot cosmic energy, are exceptionally strong and deserve further exploration in future Marvel films.
