While horror movies have always delivered memorable villains, some recent monsters are truly terrifying. Some might say the age of truly iconic horror villains is past, but filmmakers continue to create frightening new characters designed to haunt our dreams. And there’s always another scary villain on the horizon.
What makes a truly great horror villain is hard to pin down, as what people find scary varies. But most memorable villains have a striking appearance and a unique quality that sets them apart. For example, a slasher might be known for a distinctive mask, or a supernatural creature might have a special, terrifying ability. Ultimately, being original is crucial for a horror villain to stand out.
Horror fans are always eager for new and terrifying experiences, which pushes filmmakers to create increasingly shocking content. While some monsters and villains return in sequels, a single appearance can be enough to make a character truly memorable. Ultimately, the most important thing is that they genuinely frighten viewers.
In this list, “modern” refers to horror villains from the last two decades. While some of these characters have roots in older stories, they’re all relatively recent additions to the horror landscape. Some are already considered classic villains, and others are on their way to becoming icons, but they’re all still scaring people today.
10. The It Follows Entity – It Follows (2014)
The horror film It Follows helped launch a new wave of intelligent horror movies. Instead of a typical monster, the film’s threat is a shapeless entity that represents the inescapable weight of the past. While never explicitly shown, the consequences for those targeted are disturbingly graphic.
I find It Follows to be one of the less frightening villains, at least when I really think about it. It’s definitely creepy in concept – this thing just keeps coming and you can’t stop it. But honestly, it only seems dangerous if you’re the one it’s after. What’s really disturbing, though, is that it makes its victims spread the curse to others, turning them into the monsters. It’s a really unsettling idea, but it doesn’t always translate to actual scares for me.
9. The Lipstick-Face Demon – Insidious (2010)
The Lipstick-Face Demon is the main villain in the Insidious movies, and his appearance is genuinely frightening. He lives in The Further, a supernatural world featured in the series, but remains somewhat mysterious even in the later films. His debut in the first Insidious movie is a classic jump scare that continues to shock viewers.
What makes him scary is his almost-human look – it’s unsettlingly familiar. However, he doesn’t rank higher on the list because we’ve seen him so much. The more a monster like The Lipstick-Face Demon appears, the less frightening he becomes.
8. Aunt Gladys – Weapons (2025)
Whether the newest horror villain will still seem scary in her upcoming prequel remains to be seen. But Aunt Gladys from Weapons is definitely a terrifying movie villain. She’s shown to be secretly controlling everything, and her strange, magical tactics are both unsettling and frightening.
Gladys disguises herself as a frail old woman to manipulate her victims. Her actions are shockingly cruel, and many consider her to be one of the most terrifying witches ever shown on film. She’s a truly nasty villain with very little compassion. However, she loses some of her impact because she’s eventually defeated at the end of the story.
7. Art The Clown – Terrifier (2016)
As a huge fan of classic slashers, I have to say Art the Clown from Terrifier really feels like a throwback to the greats. He’s a truly terrifying, almost supernatural killer who taps into our deepest fears, and the movies don’t really bother with plot – they just let him loose to deliver one gruesome kill after another. Honestly, Terrifier and its sequels are basically just showcases for incredibly shocking and over-the-top violence.
Art’s visual design is really effective; he uses classic clown makeup but twists it to be frightening. His wide, toothy smile is deliberately unsettling, turning the typical clown image on its head. Because he’s so brutal and erratic, Art is more difficult to understand than other horror villains. However, the film focuses on him too much, which unfortunately diminishes his scariness as it goes on.
6. The Smile Monster – Smile (2022)
Similar to the creature in It Follows, the monster in Smile doesn’t have a fixed shape for most of the film. When it does appear, it’s frighteningly simple: it takes over someone close to the victim and is marked by a huge, unnatural smile. The monster in Smile is clearly meant to represent feelings of grief and depression.
What I really appreciated about this movie is that the creature wasn’t just a metaphor. The climax of the first film is genuinely unsettling – the creature transforms into something almost otherworldly as it pursues Rose. It’s a shocking and bizarre image, and honestly, it feels earned after the film takes its time building the tension. But beyond any specific scare, what truly makes this creature terrifying is the sense of possibility it embodies – the feeling that it could become anything.
5. Valak – The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Valak is arguably the most recognizable monster created within the Conjuring franchise. This demon originates from hell and deliberately appears as a nun to ridicule Christian beliefs, yet its history is surprisingly connected to the Catholic Church itself. The frightening appearance of Valak is central to the horror in The Nun.
Valak’s initial appearance is a masterclass in modern horror, demonstrating that even a franchise known for big scares can be genuinely unsettling with a more nuanced approach. Bonnie Aarons is essential to the character’s success; no other actor could capture the same chilling presence. Beyond its frightening look, Valak’s immense power is what truly makes it a memorable horror villain.
4. Longlegs – Longlegs (2024)
Many iconic horror villains are memorable because of their style, frightening scenes, or how they tap into our deepest fears. The monster in Longlegs stands out because it excels at all three. Nicolas Cage delivers a truly unforgettable and intense performance as Longlegs – a performance that’s likely to be remembered even after the film itself is forgotten.
What makes him frightening isn’t fantastical horror, but rather how believable he is. His appearance and behavior feel familiar, yet slightly unsettling, and his crimes mirror events we see in the real world. He’s scary because he feels real, not because he’s a caricature.
3. Deadite Ellie – Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Evil Dead Rise demonstrates that a horror series can remain excellent if it maintains a strong creative direction. The film also boasts a truly terrifying villain: Ellie, after she becomes possessed by the demonic forces central to the Evil Dead story. We first meet Ellie as a single mother facing hardship, but she quickly transforms into something horrifying.
When Ellie returns as a ghost to torment her family, she’s a chilling and unsettling figure, embodying a twisted version of motherhood. Alyssa Sutherland delivers a fantastic performance, making Ellie truly frightening while also hinting at a tragic past. She intentionally corrupts the deeply cherished connection between a parent and child, and is easily the most terrifying of all the undead creatures in the entire Evil Dead series.
2. Pennywise – It (2017)
As a huge horror fan, I was really blown away by Bill Skarsgård’s take on Pennywise in the recent It movies. He instantly became a new icon of the genre for me. What I loved was how different his performance was from Tim Curry’s – Curry played up the clownish aspects, but Skarsgård felt…otherworldly, like there was something truly ancient and terrifying behind the clown makeup. And honestly, the special effects definitely helped make him even scarier than before!
Pennywise is terrifying because he can transform into anything, using his supernatural abilities to create maximum fear. He doesn’t just want to kill his victims; he enjoys scaring them first, making the experience even more horrifying. He expertly preys on each person’s deepest fears, becoming their worst nightmare. While another recent villain comes close, Pennywise is arguably the scariest of them all.
1. Mr. Babadook – The Babadook (2014)
The Australian horror film The Babadook is known for its frightening villain, but it’s really about the internal struggles of its characters. The Babadook isn’t just a monster; he embodies their pain and represents the chaos within their own minds, making him a particularly unsettling and effective threat.
The idea behind the Babadook is genuinely frightening, but his visual design is truly terrifying. He evolves from a character in a children’s book into a more human-like monster, drawing inspiration from the shadowy figures in classic silent horror films. Like Lon Chaney in London After Midnight, the Babadook’s unsettling grin is impossible to forget.
