Robert Kirkman, the creator of Invincible, has stated he strongly dislikes a particular Spider-Man sequel.
The Spider-Man movies, made mostly by Sony Pictures and more recently by the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), have featured three different actors playing Peter Parker: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. There have also been highly praised animated films, like the Spider-Verse series, starring Miles Morales. The franchise has earned over $11 billion worldwide, making it one of the most financially successful movie series ever – currently the second highest-grossing of all time.
On the podcast The Escape Pod, Robert Kirkman was unusually blunt. He admitted that The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield, was his least favorite film in the entire Spider-Man series, even calling it “terrible.” This was surprising because Kirkman rarely shares negative opinions and generally keeps critical comments private.
Despite generally being critical, he did have some positive things to say about The Amazing Spider-Man 2. He liked Andrew Garfield’s performance as Spider-Man and Jamie Foxx’s acting, but ultimately felt the movie didn’t work as a whole. He thought the story was disjointed and lacked a clear, cohesive narrative.
I generally avoid sharing my movie opinions publicly, but I have to say, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was really bad. I do like Jamie Foxx and think Andrew Garfield was a fantastic Spider-Man, and there are some good parts to those films, but overall, that movie just doesn’t work.
In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man tries to balance fighting crime with his relationship with Gwen Stacy (played by Emma Stone). He also begins to investigate the truth behind his parents’ deaths, which leads him to Oscorp. The film introduces the villain Electro (Jamie Foxx) and shows Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) transforming into the Green Goblin. It also features the tragic death of Gwen Stacy, a well-known moment for Spider-Man fans.
Robert Kirkman is a highly respected and popular name in comics. He’s famous for creating Invincible, but he also developed the hugely successful The Walking Dead. He’s even brought characters from different universes together, as seen in Marvel Team-Up #14, where Invincible’s Mark Grayson unexpectedly finds himself in the Marvel Universe. There, he teams up with Spider-Man to battle Doc Ock before returning home.
Spider-Man first appeared in 1962, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and quickly became one of Marvel’s most beloved heroes. He was first introduced in the comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 during the Silver Age of comics. Due to his immediate popularity, Spider-Man soon got his own comic series, The Amazing Spider-Man, which began in March 1963.
