A beloved PC first-person shooter from 1995 is now available as a free download on GOG, and it looks like it will stay free indefinitely. While it wasn’t a huge hit when it first came out, it’s largely been forgotten over the past three decades – if people even remember it existed!
Hey, so GOG just added Citadel Remastered to their store, and I’m pretty excited! It’s a revamped version of Citadel (also known as Cytadela), a first-person shooter that first came out way back in 1995. It was made by Virtual Design and published by Arrakis Software for the Amiga 500. Honestly, when it originally released, it got some okay reviews, but it didn’t really make a huge splash – you know, compared to the big FPS titles that were defining the genre back then. It was a bit of a hidden gem!
Remastered For the First Time
I was so excited to hear about this new remaster! It’s completely free, which is awesome, but you can’t find it on Steam or the Epic Games Store, which is a little strange. What’s really cool is they’ve kept all the original levels and art – it feels so nostalgic! But on top of that, they’ve updated the gameplay to feel more modern and given the graphics a bit of a polish too. It’s the best of both worlds!
We’ve improved the game with updated graphics, new textures and enemies, and a more balanced difficulty level. We’ve also added extra training levels, quicksave and quickload features, and the ability to easily switch weapons using the mouse wheel. Finally, the game now supports full screen modes.
It’s no surprise that people who enjoyed this Amiga game in the 1990s are thrilled it’s been re-released on GOG, and that it’s available as a DRM-free download.
One player called the game “wonderful” and praised its atmosphere, saying they used to play it constantly on their Amiga. Another simply stated it was exactly what they were looking for – a new old game to enjoy.
It’s currently unknown who owns the license for this, or if there are any future plans for it. The recent re-release might hint at something happening with it, or could simply be a way to test how much interest there is. However, this is all just guesswork at this point.
