The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is known for its impactful and often shocking conclusions. From the devastating loss to Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, where half of all life disappeared, to the heartbreaking finale of Avengers: Endgame and the death of Tony Stark – a character central to the entire saga – these endings weren’t always as they seemed. Initial versions of these climaxes sometimes differed significantly from what audiences ultimately saw.
Over the years, several alternate endings for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies and shows have been considered. Some were so different from what we ultimately saw that they would have significantly changed the direction of the MCU, even affecting future films like Avengers: Doomsday. Here are 8 of those alternate endings that could have had a major, lasting impact on the franchise.
Loki Almost (Actually) Died In The Dark World

As a huge Loki fan, I always knew they’d find a way to bring him back somehow! It’s become a running joke that he keeps ‘dying’ and then reappearing, especially after Infinity War and his own series. But did you know that in Thor: The Dark World, Loki was supposed to actually stay dead? Seriously! The original plan wasn’t a fake-out at all – they were really going to kill him off!
If this had happened, it would have drastically altered the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Loki went on to be a central figure in many stories after The Dark World. It’s hard to picture the MCU as it is today without him, considering his impact in projects like Infinity War – where his death initially fueled Thor’s determination to defeat Thanos – and his own series, Loki.
Sinister Strange Almost Played A Shocking Role

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness didn’t quite live up to expectations. One issue was that the movie didn’t center enough on Doctor Strange himself. The story also felt disconnected from the events of WandaVision, especially regarding Wanda’s character development at the end of that series. Additionally, the film included some silly scenes, like a fight between two Doctor Strange variants using musical notes.
The movie could have been much stronger with a different ending, and it would have created a fantastic setup for Doctor Strange’s future. Originally, the plan was to reveal that Sinister Strange had taken the place of the main Doctor Strange (from universe 616), putting the entire universe at risk and leaving Doctor Strange’s fate uncertain.
Scott Lang And Hope van Dyne Nearly Had A More Dire Fate

Following the success of Endgame, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was one of several Marvel movies that didn’t quite meet expectations. This was partly due to problems with the overall plan for the character Kang, but the film’s story itself also didn’t resonate with many audiences.
It’s fascinating to think about how the movie could have ended differently. The original plan had Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne stuck in the Quantum Realm, leaving their future uncertain and in a much more dangerous situation. That would have been a bolder storytelling choice, and it’s a little disappointing the filmmakers didn’t take that risk and show they’re willing to make big moves with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Avengers Almost Reunited At The End Of Civil War

Captain America: Civil War was a surprising film for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving the Avengers divided. Interestingly, an early version of the movie almost had a different ending where the team reconciled and reunited to fight together. If that had happened, it would have greatly changed the events of Infinity War.
Starting Infinity War with the Avengers fractured created a much stronger emotional impact than previous films. This made the team’s eventual reunion in Endgame even more satisfying, and it would have been a real loss if that powerful moment hadn’t happened.
Captain Marvel Almost Died In The Marvels

Reviews for The Marvels were mostly negative, continuing a pattern of recent Marvel movies failing to connect with audiences after Endgame. While it’s unknown if a different ending would have changed that, the discarded ending itself is surprising. It would have shown Captain Marvel nearly dying at the film’s conclusion.
Captain Marvel is expected to play a key role in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though her appearance in the upcoming film isn’t yet confirmed. Removing her character now would have been a big loss. Plus, Marvel has already faced criticism for killing off several prominent female characters in recent films, including since Endgame, and this would have continued that trend.
Black Widow’s Ending Was Almost Even More Emotional

Many fans consider Black Widow to be one of the most overlooked films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Its release after Endgame – following Natasha Romanoff’s death – and during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic likely contributed to this. Despite these challenges, the film tells a deeply emotional and impactful story, particularly focusing on the found family at its heart.
An alternate ending considered showing Natasha returning to her childhood home in Ohio. This would have strengthened the bond between her and Yelena, emphasizing their sisterly connection, and provided a more impactful and emotional farewell to the character.
Loki Was Going To Save The Temporal Loom

Loki is widely considered one of the best shows in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and possibly one of the best Marvel projects ever made, especially after the events of Endgame. A particularly powerful moment was the emotional and impactful ending where Loki sacrifices himself to save reality, becoming the God of Time and preventing the destruction of the timeline.
It initially appeared Loki was doomed, but surprisingly, he’s been confirmed to return in Doomsday. However, the ending almost played out differently: Loki was originally going to save the Temporal Loom instead of letting it be destroyed, physically holding it together to keep it from falling apart. This would have given him more freedom in future storylines, but it wouldn’t have been the powerful sacrifice that was so important for his growth as a character.
Endgame’s Writers Considered Keeping Tony Stark Alive

A key moment in Endgame is Tony Stark’s selfless sacrifice to finally defeat Thanos. This emotionally powerful scene has had a lasting impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, the writers initially considered letting Tony Stark live, which would have significantly altered the future of the MCU. For example, Robert Downey Jr. wouldn’t be available to play Doctor Doom in the planned Avengers: Doomsday movie, and the consequences of that change are still unknown.
Beyond Robert Downey Jr.’s performance, Tony Stark’s death has had a ripple effect on other characters. For instance, in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker likely wouldn’t have faced the challenges he did if Tony Stark, his friend and mentor, had been around to offer guidance. This could have dramatically changed the course of many stories.
