In Just 4 Days, Warner Bros’ Mortal Kombat Sequel Officially Releases

Hollywood studios are always looking for huge hits, and Warner Bros. has one on the way. Even though Paramount Pictures is trying to buy the studio and the deal is facing some legal issues, Warner Bros. is still releasing new films. They’ve already scheduled a packed 2026 with movies like Wuthering Heights, The Bride!, They Will Kill You, and Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.

Warner Bros. has seen mixed results at the box office recently. While Wuthering Heights was a big success, earning over $240 million, and The Mummy is expected to surpass $100 million worldwide, their other two films haven’t performed as well. The Bride! was a particularly big flop, costing $90 million to make but earning very little (according to Variety). This is a downturn from last year, when Warner Bros. had seven movies in a row that opened to over $40 million domestically.

Things are looking up for the studio. They have two promising DC Universe films on the way, Supergirl and Clayface, both expected to perform well. The popular Evil Dead franchise is also returning with a new movie, following a hugely successful installment that earned $147 million just three years ago. Plus, Dune: Part Three will wrap up the year, alongside an animated The Cat In The Hat and a range of exciting sequels and original films – all of which could lead to another period of success for WB.

The highly anticipated sequel, Mortal Kombat II, is set to release this Friday, May 8th! This expands the popular fantasy action thriller franchise, which was rebooted in 2021, after a five-year wait.

Mortal Kombat 2 Builds Out The Universe Established In 2021’s Mortal Kombat Movie

The 2021 film Mortal Kombat revitalized the classic conflict between Earthrealm and Outworld. The story centers on a new character, Cole Young, as the villain Shang Tsung dispatches fighters to eliminate Earthrealm’s greatest warriors before a crucial tenth tournament. Marked for death himself, Cole joins the fight and helps defeat Shang Tsung’s army, preventing Outworld from taking over Earthrealm.

Mortal Kombat II continues the story, picking up where the first film left off. Johnny Cage joins the fight as a new defender of Earthrealm, teaming up with Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, Jax, and Cole. They’re all fighting under Lord Raiden, and they gain a powerful ally in Kitana, as they face the forces of Shang Tsung and Shao Khan.

Now that a full tournament is officially part of the story, Mortal Kombat II delivers tons of battles featuring iconic video game characters. The game also expands on the series’ rich backstory, developing the fighters and setting the stage for future games. Basically, you can look forward to a lot of detailed world-building and, of course, the famously over-the-top, violent finishing moves.

How To Watch Mortal Kombat 2

Warner Bros. is giving Mortal Kombat II a wide release in theaters worldwide. Unlike the first movie, which premiered on HBO Max and in cinemas at the same time, this sequel will only be shown on the big screen. The studio is so confident it will be a success that they’ve even delayed its release from October 2025 to May 2026.

The best way to find out where you can watch Mortal Kombat II is to check local movie listings. If you’re looking for a truly immersive experience, the film will be available in premium formats like IMAX and 4DX, which are best seen in theaters. You can find showtimes at the links below:
