Jeph Loeb is a truly remarkable comic book writer, a multiple Hall of Fame inductee with a long and impressive career. While he’s famous for his work at Marvel, particularly the groundbreaking Color Series which offered fresh, emotional takes on classic heroes, he’s even more celebrated for his contributions to DC Comics. And with good reason – many consider his DC work to be among the best the company has ever published.
5) Catwoman: When in Rome

As a huge fan, I truly believe Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale were a perfect creative partnership, and their Batman stories prove it. Their series really built on the amazing foundation they laid with The Long Halloween, finally showing us what Catwoman was up to in Italy – specifically, her search to find out if Carmine Falcone was actually her father. The story runs alongside the second half of Dark Victory, all happening within just one incredibly packed week. It’s full of action, mystery, and honestly, the character work is just phenomenal. Loeb always understood Selina Kyle so well, and this story showcases that talent beautifully, with a classic crime and mystery feel.
4) Batman/The Spirit

Many believe Batman was inspired by the character the Spirit, and it’s easy to see why – their detective stories and approaches are very similar. That’s what makes this team-up so exciting! When their most dangerous enemies combine forces to destroy them both, it creates a fantastic and colorful group of villains that truly challenge Batman and the Spirit. The two heroes play off each other wonderfully, with the Spirit adding a much-needed dose of humor. This single-issue comic delivers everything you’d hope for in a crossover, and it’s a must-read for fans of either character.
3) Batman: The Long Halloween

Many consider The Long Halloween to be one of Batman’s most crucial stories, and it’s likely his most influential. Almost every major Batman adaptation since its release has drawn inspiration from it. This story presents a compelling mystery that truly tests Batman’s skills, and it beautifully explores the relationship between Batman, Gordon, and Harvey Dent – showing how their partnership rises and ultimately falls. Beyond being a fantastic mystery and character study, it depicts the pivotal shift in Gotham City’s criminal element, moving from traditional mobsters to the costumed villains we know today. Over the course of a year, the story sets each character on the path to their ultimate fate, solidifying its place as one of Batman’s finest stories.
2) Batman: Dark Victory

I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I actually prefer Dark Victory over The Long Halloween. The Long Halloween is a classic and deserves all the praise it gets, but Dark Victory builds on that foundation brilliantly. We see Batman really struggling after losing Harvey Dent, becoming isolated and afraid of failing. Then Dick Grayson arrives as Robin, and helps Batman find his way back from that darkness. It’s a story about learning to trust again, and it introduces Robin in a fantastic way – marking Batman’s journey toward healing and the beginning of one of the greatest partnerships in comics.
1) Superman: For All Seasons

If you want to truly understand Superman, this book is a must-read. Told through four issues, each representing a different season, it’s the definitive story of Clark Kent’s journey to becoming Superman. It follows him as he leaves Smallville for Metropolis and navigates the challenges of growing up and accepting his destiny. This story perfectly captures Superman’s hopeful spirit, underlying melancholy, and genuine kindness. He may not have all the answers, but he always knows what’s important: helping others. It’s easily one of the best Superman stories ever told, and a standout work by Jeph Loeb.
