Meryl Streep won’t be attending the 2026 Met Gala. That’s all.
Anne Hathaway, known for her role in The Devil Wears Prada, will not be attending the Met Gala on May 4th, despite rumors that this year would be her first time at the event.
But that should come as no surprise.
Meryl Streep has received invitations to the Met Gala for years, but she’s never gone, according to her publicist. In a statement to People magazine, the representative explained that while Streep admires Vogue editor Anna Wintour’s creativity and energy, the event just doesn’t appeal to her personal style.
Many expected Meryl Streep to eventually attend the Met Gala, particularly because of her close relationship with Anna Wintour—who is believed to be the inspiration for Meryl’s character in both The Devil Wears Prada and a potential sequel. However, it now seems unlikely she’ll ever grace the red carpet at fashion’s biggest event.
Despite this, fans of fashion can still get style ideas from Meryl Streep’s portrayal of Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, though she recently shared that the character wasn’t entirely based on Vogue‘s Anna Wintour.
She explained to TopMob News in April that she didn’t want to simply copy the original character. She wanted to develop her own unique portrayal. Now, after years of playing the role, she feels she’s fully realized her version of the character, and any changes that have occurred are a result of her own creative choices.

Meryl found it simple to portray Miranda because she didn’t know Anna before filming the 2006 movie – they became friends later on. Plus, she genuinely enjoys Anna’s personality and style.
Meryl described her as very funny and clever, but not enigmatic. She believes the woman simply lives authentically and prioritizes her own life and well-being, which feels a bit unusual in today’s world.
She went on to say that in a world where people constantly share every detail of their lives – showing everything from getting ready to personal moments – she really appreciates Taylor Swift’s privacy and quiet nature.
