Recently, Nvidia introduced DLSS 5, its latest upscaling technology, and the initial demonstrations sparked a lot of discussion.
People were upset with how much an AI tool altered the look of a game, especially the characters, whose faces were noticeably different.
The changes made to Grace Ashcroft’s appearance in Resident Evil Requiem sparked a lot of discussion. Her character received a significant visual overhaul – details like her lips, eyes, and hair were completely changed – and many fans disliked this AI-powered “glow-up.”
You’re probably curious about Capcom’s response to this. Eurogamer asked Masato Kumzawa, the producer of Requiem, for their perspective.
He declined to discuss the team’s work on the DLSS 5 demo, but expressed optimism about how things are progressing.
Kumzawa noted that the positive feedback from players who enjoyed the original Grace design and didn’t want it altered was encouraging…
He explained that this showed they’d successfully created the design, and highlighted how quickly Grace became popular with fans, as evidenced by the strong reactions to her design.
It’s currently unknown if Capcom plans to add support for DLSS 5 to their games in the future. While Capcom has discussed how they’re using AI technology, their methods seem different from what Nvidia’s DLSS 5 provides.
We’ll have to wait and see how DLSS 5 performs once it’s released and which games actually use it.
