In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the highly acclaimed anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Bandai Namco pulled out all the stops. They teamed up with KFC to distribute unique merchandise at certain KFC restaurants in China. At San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), The Gundam Showcase – Highlighting 30 Years of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing – gathered the English dub cast members, who handed out exclusive items to attendees. Additionally, the panel unveiled updates on the second Gundam Hathaway film and the upcoming Iron-Blooded Orphan animated project. This year will see the return of Gundam Wing Endless Waltz, both as an OVA and film sequel to the original series, in theaters across Japan and North America.
The most memorable part was a three-minute tribute titled Operation 30th, commemorating 30 years of the anime, which was directed by Toru Iwasawa, renowned for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. This short included modernized animation and designs reminiscent of the original series. It also displayed scenes from the novel sequel, Frozen Teardrop, featuring mobile suits from that series and characters from the novels sneaking into the video for a surprise appearance. The clip concludes with a hint about more to come: “Mission accepted.” Although Bandai didn’t make any announcements during the event, it has sparked much conjecture among fans.
Will New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop be Adapted Into an Anime?
Gundam Wing, originally an anime series, continues to be highly appreciated within the franchise, particularly by fans in North America and other English-speaking regions. This show was one of the initial successes on Toonami, significantly contributing to the growth of this programming block’s popularity. Many mobile suits from the series are well-loved among the fanbase, making them some of the most frequently re-released model kits in Bandai’s Gunpla line. Due to its endearing charm, it seems logical that Bandai and Sunrise Studios might consider a sequel to Gundam Wing.
It seems that a significant number of fans encounter difficulties with the anime titled “New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop“. The narrative revolves around several characters, such as the main character Heero, becoming frozen and waking up in a distant future. Subsequently, Heero reassembles a fresh team of Gundam pilots, who resemble the original Gundam crew from the original series quite closely. However, the storyline can be confusing at times due to its intricate and complex nature. Despite these complications, fans have appreciated the innovative designs of the new mobile suits, particularly the Snow White model, which is a unique, all-white version of the famous Wing Gundam Zero mobile suit from “Endless Waltz“.
Although “Frozen Teardrop” is a contentious addition to the Gundam series, it might still be beneficial for Bandai to create an animated project around it to promote their model kits. However, no official announcements have been made yet. The brief glimpses of “Frozen Teardrop” in the Operation 30th video could merely be artistic interpretations representing the entire Gundam Wing sub-franchise. Nevertheless, Bandai has been actively promoting Gundam Wing as one of Gundam’s flagship shows, alongside the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime and Gundam Seed. The “Mission Accepted” teaser at the end of Operation 30th seems to suggest that more from the franchise is on the horizon, possibly a Frozen Teardrop adaptation. We believe that in the long term, we haven’t seen the last of Gundam Wing as long as the model kits remain popular and fans continue to enjoy Two-Mix.
