Television is full of surprises. Sometimes shows nobody expects succeed and become cultural icons, while promising series quickly fail, even with good reviews. Now, Fox has cancelled another well-received show after just two seasons, only a couple of weeks after its latest season ended.
Fox announced the cancellation of the series ‘Going Dutch’ on Monday. According to Deadline, this makes it the first show cancelled by the network before its presentation of upcoming programs on May 11th. While ‘Going Dutch’ was being considered for another season, it hadn’t been performing well enough. In better news, Fox has renewed ‘Animal Control’ starring Joel McHale for a fifth season.
What is Going Dutch About?

The comedy series Going Dutch centers around Colonel Patrick Quinn (Leary), a brash and outspoken U.S. Army officer. After a major outburst, he’s sent to the Netherlands as punishment – to command a practically useless army base. This base is more famous for its gourmet food, bowling alley, luxurious laundry service, and even a cheese-making facility than any actual military strategy. To make things even more complicated, Quinn discovers his estranged daughter, Maggie (Taylor Misiak), is currently the base’s interim commander. The show also stars Danny Pudi, Laci Mosely, Hal Cumpston, Joe Morton, Catherine Tate, and Kristen Johnson.
Critics generally liked the show, giving it an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, positive reviews didn’t lead to strong viewership. While the audience score is a mixed 54%, the show never really gained a large audience, even after the first season when you’d expect it to be more popular. This lack of strong ratings was ultimately why the series ended.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag over at the network. Sadly, we won’t be seeing Going Dutch return, but there’s good news for fans of Doc and Memory of a Killer – both have been renewed. They’ve also given another season to the dramedy Best Medicine. I’m especially looking forward to next week’s upfronts, where they’re promising to share more details, including what’s happening with the Family Guy spin-off, Stewie. Hopefully, we’ll get some solid answers then.
