IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak has hinted at a possible sequel to 007: First Light, saying it will likely depend on the game’s sales performance. In an interview with The Game Business, Abrak discussed the strong focus on quality shared by his studio and Amazon, who owns the James Bond license.
When we first started working with Amazon on 007: First Light, there was a period of adjustment, as you’d expect when collaborating with new people,” Abrak explained. “But they quickly recognized the progress we’d already made, and we moved forward, focusing on coordinating all the details and planning for the marketing campaign.
We’ve had a consistent executive producer from MGM, and now Amazon, who’s been with us since the beginning and remains a key partner. Amazon quickly recognized the potential of the project, and as investors and owners of the intellectual property, they naturally want to ensure high quality. After experiencing the game themselves, they became strong supporters, and we truly appreciate their backing.
Regarding a possible follow-up to 007: First Light, the publication points out that IO Interactive typically makes sequels more affordably than their previous games, similar to what they did with the Hitman trilogy. Ultimately, both IO Interactive and Amazon agree that the deciding factor will be whether they can deliver a high-quality game.
We’re committed to delivering high-quality work and standing behind it, and it seems Amazon shares that same dedication. We’re all eager to see how this project performs – not just on the Amazon/MGM side, but also with our own team’s contributions. We’re especially interested in whether players will connect with the character we’ve created and if a strong community will form around them, wanting to see more content.
We feel incredibly fortunate, especially considering the challenges many face in this field. We’re in a lucky position where we have the freedom to choose projects we’re passionate about. If this one succeeds and the community loves it, there’s no reason not to pursue it further.
Rasmus Poulsen, the art director for 007: First Light, shared that early in the game’s development, there were some unusual conversations between IO Interactive and Amazon. One topic they discussed was whether James Bond would have a favorite color for his cars.
We had some surprisingly odd conversations, like debating what color car James Bond would never choose. People had all sorts of different opinions, and we’d think, ‘This is a strange thing to be discussing!’ These unusual topics would sometimes take three meetings to resolve, while much bigger, more important decisions were made quickly.
The new James Bond game, 007: First Light, will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on May 27th. A version for the Nintendo Switch 2 is planned for release later this summer.
