Just as MindsEye was already facing major problems, news has emerged that its developer, Build A Rocket Boy, has recently cut around 170 jobs.
Sources at Kotaku report this significant reduction brings the studio’s total staff size to approximately 80 people.
Remember that famous scene from The Simpsons where Homer tries to jump the Springfield Gorge, but crashes into every rock on the way down? That’s a pretty good analogy for what’s been happening with MindsEye.
This is the third time the company has had to lay off employees, happening after the release of their open world shooter game last summer.
As a big fan, I remember Build A Rocket Boy talking about wanting to completely overhaul MindsEye. They basically said they were going to relaunch it to try and fix the issues and get people to enjoy it again. It sounds like they really want to turn things around for the game!
Despite several updates, the game failed to regain popularity after receiving negative reviews and disappointing players.
The game received a new update last week with a story mission intended to kick off larger expansions. However, recent news of significant layoffs makes those plans seem less likely to happen.
To put it simply, the real problem isn’t just that MindsEye has issues. The people in charge at Build A Rocket Boy are claiming the project failed because of things like internal sabotage, which seems like a way to avoid taking responsibility.
Last month, the company faced public accusations of invading employee privacy. Union workers stated that the studio collected their data without explaining how it would be used.
We don’t see any clear path to improvement for MindsEye, and we expect things might actually get worse from here.
