Adolescence writer’s “contemporary romantic drama” with Harry Potter and Line of Duty stars gets confirmed release date

Channel 4 announced the premiere date for the new drama ‘Falling,’ written by Jack Thorne, the creator of ‘Adolescence,’ and it’s coming soon.

The new romantic drama begins on Channel 4 with the first two episodes airing back-to-back on Tuesday, May 19th, and Wednesday, May 20th, at 9pm. All episodes will also be available to stream on Channel 4 starting at 9pm on May 19th.

The show centers on Anna, a nun played by Keeley Hawes (known from Line of Duty), and David, a Catholic priest portrayed by Paapa Essiedu (Black Mirror). It explores their unexpected love story and the challenges it presents to their faith, commitments, and relationship with God.

The cast includes Rakie Ayola (known for Kaos), Jason Watkins (Coma), Niamh Cusack (Heartbeat), Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey), David Dawson (My Policeman), Susan Brown (Mr Bates vs The Post Office), and Sandra Voe (Vera Drake), alongside rising stars Holly Rhys and Shayde Sinclair, joining Hawes and Essiedu.

Thorne announced he’s thrilled to be writing a love story, collaborating with Peter Hoar. He expressed gratitude that they were able to bring Keeley Hawes and Paapa Essiedu, along with a fantastic cast, on board for the project, which is being produced by The Forge and Channel 4.

Hawes expressed her excitement about playing Anna and collaborating with Paapa Essiedu to perform Jack Thorne’s wonderfully written scripts.

Essiedu added that the story of ‘Falling’ really showcases Jack Thorne’s amazing ability to find beauty in everyday moments. He’s excited to collaborate with Keeley, Peter, and the entire team to create this world.

I’ve always been a big fan of Keeley Hawes – she’s been in so many great shows! You might recognize her from things like ‘Ashes to Ashes’, the intense spy drama ‘Spooks’, or even the classic ‘Upstairs Downstairs’. But for me, she really shone as Detective Inspector Lindsay Denton in ‘Line of Duty’. Her performance in seasons two and three was just brilliant, and I still think about it!

Essiedu is well-known for his roles in the comedy-drama I May Destroy You and the addiction recovery drama The Outrun. He’s also going to be in the upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO Max.

Falling will air on Channel 4.
