GTA 6 boss explains why PC players will have to wait longer than PS5 and Xbox fans

GTA 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox in November (though there’s a chance of another delay). However, many are wondering why the highly anticipated game isn’t being released on PC at the same time as the console versions.

The question was recently raised in a Bloomberg interview, where industry reporter Jason Schreier asked Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, about it directly.

They also discussed the high sales targets for the game, explaining that the massive budget for GTA 6 – a result of eight years of development and a huge team – means they’re hoping to sell well over 10 million copies.

But what’s the deal with the lack of a PC version at launch?

The reporter notes that while a PC version of [GTA 6] is likely, mirroring Rockstar’s past releases, this could be a gamble for Take-Two. This is because PC gaming now accounts for a large portion of the overall games market.

The CEO mentioned in the interview that PC sales could account for 45 to 50 percent of revenue for a major new release. Given that potential, it doesn’t make sense to prioritize a console launch over PC – why miss out on that much money?

According to Zelnick, Rockstar’s priority is to cater to its most dedicated fans first. Essentially, they want to focus on pleasing their core audience before expanding to other platforms.

Zelnick explained that Rockstar typically begins development on consoles, believing that focusing on the main audience first is crucial for a successful launch.

Focusing on your main customer is essential. If you don’t prioritize and satisfy them first, you won’t be able to attract other customers effectively.

When questioned about whether this decision was connected to any agreements with PlayStation, Zelnick stated directly that it wasn’t.

“No,” he said. “I mean, historically Rockstar’s gone to console first.”

When a reporter pointed out that this decision seemed risky given the current gaming market, Zelnick offered a short response.

He said, simply, “We’ll see how it works out.”

Indeed, we will! And we’ll be sure to let you know as we hear more about GTA 6 on PC.

GTA 6 launches 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
