Mortal Kombat II Review: The Bloody Sequel Levels Up With Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage

The sequel builds upon the foundation of the first movie, greatly expanding the game’s universe into an exciting new live-action series. Plus, Johnny Cage makes a fantastic appearance!

The Mortal Kombat games have always focused on one-on-one fights, welcoming players of all skill levels – from those who mastered complex moves to those who simply button-mashed. Simon McQuoid’s follow-up to his 2021 film continues this tradition, blending the game’s action with a story about protecting Earthrealm from the ruthless Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford). Kahn is conquering different realms, and his sights are now set on Kitana’s world. As his power increases, he desires even more, leading to a deadly Mortal Kombat tournament where the fate of Earthrealm hangs in the balance.

While the heroes have some skilled fighters like Jax, Liu Kang, Cole Young, and Sonya Blade, they often rely on Johnny Cage when they need extra help. The issue is that Cage is an actor with no real fighting experience, and he’s completely unprepared for the dangerous arenas he’s forced to compete in.

One Battle After Another

Similar to the game, the movie focuses on characters facing off in battles. These fight scenes are a huge part of what makes Mortal Kombat II so enjoyable—they’re as intense and over-the-top as fans expect, but feel more meaningful because we get to know the characters. You actually care about who wins or loses, and each knockout feels impactful, ultimately making for a more satisfying movie experience.

McQuoid’s initial film struggled to find its footing, unable to fully blend what fans wanted with the creative team’s vision. However, the sequel beautifully balances honoring fan expectations with a story that feels worthy of a cinematic experience. The meaningful relationships, like the one between Kitana and Jade (played by Tati Gabrielle), give Mortal Kombat II depth beyond just exciting action and nostalgic references to the games.

A Fun ’80s Flashback

Honestly, this movie finally gave the franchise the jolt of energy it needed, and it came with Johnny Cage! He’s totally inspired by those awesome ’80s action stars like Jean-Claude Van Damme, and you can feel that vibe throughout the whole film. It’s like watching an ’80s action movie inside Mortal Kombat! There’s some seriously cheesy, but fun, dialogue and moments that are just so memorable. Karl Urban absolutely nails the role, and he fits perfectly with the characters McQuoid established in the first movie, bringing a really fun dynamic to the whole team.

Nobody truly expects much from Johnny, including himself, which lets the movie playfully show his growth as a fighter. He’s all talk and no skill beyond being a movie star, but somehow, he’s Earthrealm’s best hope. It’s this surprising contrast that makes Mortal Kombat II so entertaining.

While Mortal Kombat II isn’t a flawless film, it’s thoroughly enjoyable and a good reminder that movies can just be pure, lighthearted fun – a welcome escape from reality and all its craziness.

Mortal Kombat II hits theaters on May 8, 2026.
