It’s generally agreed that the X-Men franchise could have been much better under 20th Century Fox. However, rumors about plans for a fix or complete restart before now shouldn’t necessarily be believed.
It would have been really exciting if a specific rumor had turned out to be true in the years before December 2026.
Rumors spread that Marvel Studios, led by Kevin Feige, considered working with the Russo Brothers – the directors behind the hugely successful superhero films Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame – to relaunch the X-Men franchise within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Russo Bros. Deny Popular X-Men Rumor
Joe Russo stated definitively, “We never once talked about doing X-Men. Our focus was always entirely on Secret Wars. That comic was the first one I ever read as a child, and it’s what got me hooked on comics. I actually devoured the entire series in a single sitting – a friend let me borrow them, and I spent a couple of hours just reading it all.”
He explained that they’d always discussed making a film, but the real challenge was finding the right story. It took them a long time to develop an idea they felt was compelling enough to share.
X-Men Getting a Glorious, True Reboot in the MCU
As a quick reminder, Avengers: Secret Wars is the movie coming directly after Avengers: Doomsday and will launch Phase Seven of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, continuing the overall storyline.
Before the planned changes in 2027 and 2028, as Marvel director Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts) recently confirmed, there will be individual films released—and potentially at least one before Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027.
The X-Men’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday won’t just be a nod to fans of the original films. Reports suggest that key characters like Cyclops (James Marsden), Professor X (Sir Patrick Stewart), Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), Beast (Kelsey Grammar), Magneto (Ian McKellen), and possibly Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) will have a significant role, potentially even leading to a conflict with the Avengers.
It took 26 years for these two universes to finally connect, and it seems the Russo Brothers weren’t involved in any earlier plans for this crossover – until now.
