Ed Boon, one of the creators of Mortal Kombat, has hinted that a new game in the popular fighting game series is being planned. Recent rumors suggest NetherRealm Studios, led by Boon, is working on Injustice 3, a third installment in the DC-based fighting game series. While fans have long requested a new Injustice game, this has led to questions about when we might see the next Mortal Kombat title. Boon has confirmed the team at NetherRealm is considering another Mortal Kombat game, but didn’t offer any details.
In an interview with Collider, NetherRealm’s Ed Boon was asked about the studio’s next game. He didn’t share any specifics, saying that doing so would cause problems. However, Boon did confirm that NetherRealm is working on another Mortal Kombat title. It’s unclear if this will be a direct sequel to 2023’s Mortal Kombat 1 or a separate spin-off game, but the statement indicates that the Mortal Kombat franchise will remain a key focus for the studio in the future.
Boon hinted at exciting news coming soon, saying they’re working on another Mortal Kombat game and exploring other projects like movies or TV shows. He joked that revealing too much would get him in trouble, but confirmed they have ‘a lot of great announcements’ planned.

If NetherRealm is working on Injustice 3, it probably won’t come out until 2027. This would follow the studio’s usual pattern of releasing major games about every four years, following Mortal Kombat 1. That would mean the next full Mortal Kombat game wouldn’t arrive until after 2030, which is a long wait. So, Ed Boon and the team at NetherRealm might be planning to release another Mortal Kombat game sooner to keep fans happy in the meantime.
Fans of Mortal Kombat have two exciting things to look forward to! The new Mortal Kombat 2 movie arrives in theaters this Friday, May 8th. Plus, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, which came out last year, just got an update that significantly improves the gameplay experience.
