Kentaro Miura, the creator of the iconic manga Berserk, left a huge mark on the anime and manga world. He sadly passed away on May 6th, 2021, from an aortic dissection, and his loss was deeply felt. After a year-long pause, the Berserk manga continued with writer Kouji Mori and the artists at Studio Gaga, who used Miura’s notes and previous conversations to finish the story as a tribute to him. Five years after his passing, fans are remembering Miura and celebrating his incredible work, while Kouji Mori continues to honor his friend’s legacy.
To honor the memory of Kentaro Miura, Kouji Mori, who is now continuing the Berserk manga, shared a heartfelt message about his friend. He said it feels like time has stopped since Miura’s passing five years ago. They often talked about traveling together once Berserk was completed, with Miura playfully estimating it would finish around the time Mori finished his own manga, Tiger and Diver. Mori admitted he didn’t always believe those calculations! He expressed a desire to finish both Berserk and Tiger and Diver properly, and finally take that trip together. He shared a photo of them taken during a trip to Okinawa, recalling how much he enjoyed swimming. Dark Horse Comics, who publish the English version of Berserk, also posted a moving tribute.

Berserk’s Legacy
I remember reading the afterword in Volume 42 of Berserk, and it really struck me. Mori, who took over writing after Miura’s passing, addressed the fans directly. He acknowledged that continuing Berserk without Miura would inevitably be flawed, and he understood if people struggled with that – because he felt the same way! He emphasized how much he admired Miura, both as a fellow artist and a fan. But, as Miura’s close friend, he felt compelled to finish the story Miura had started, and he asked for our understanding in doing so. It was a very heartfelt message.
It’s really hard to say what’s next for Berserk. While Mori and Gaga are still working on the manga, we haven’t gotten any news about when the next chapter of the main story will come out. That’s a bit disappointing, especially since we last saw Guts in a really precarious situation – trapped in a seemingly inescapable supernatural cave. And things aren’t looking good for him overall, with Griffith recently taking Casca and Guts struggling with his mental health. To top it off, there’s still no word on a new anime adaptation, so all Berserk fans can do is hope that new content is on the way.
