Invincible VS Is Creating a Very Different Storyline Than the Comics or TV Show

As a big fighting game fan, I’ve been checking out Invincible VS, and it’s one of several adaptations that came out this year. We’ve already seen games like Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls try some really unique things with established characters, and Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game really leaned into what fans wanted. Invincible VS feels more like the Avatar game – it’s all about putting beloved characters from the show against each other in some seriously intense fights. It’s a blast to see these characters clash!

The game’s story mode offers a unique narrative, drawing inspiration from the Invincible universe but forging its own path with new villains and a different take on the setting. The campaign’s ending actually hints at a completely new storyline, unlike anything fans have seen before. This creative decision by Skybound is exciting, and hopefully, they’ll build on it in future installments.

Invincible VS Sets Up A Very Different Timeline For The Franchise

The campaign mode in Invincible VS tells a unique story, setting it apart from other versions of the Mark Grayson saga. The animated series has generally followed the comic book storyline, with some updates to appeal to contemporary viewers. While the show isn’t afraid to explore new paths—like the trip to hell in season 4, which wasn’t in the comics—Invincible VS goes much further, appearing to create a completely new timeline and reimagining many well-known characters from the franchise.

The single-player campaign in Invincible VS takes place in an alternate universe where things didn’t happen as they did in the main story. In this reality, Omni-Man hasn’t turned good – or at least, Invincible still thinks his father is trying to conquer Earth for the Viltrumites. Some characters, like Rex, have also lived longer, even fighting enemies like Conquest before they were originally introduced. The story unfolds to reveal that all these changes are being caused by the Technicians, a relatively minor group from the original story who can travel between different realities.

The whole campaign revolves around a scheme to create energy by exploiting fights between superpowered heroes and villains. The villains use holograms and devices that weaken powers to make these constant battles happen. When the heroes and villains finally team up and escape, they find the Technicans have taken control of Earth while they were occupied. The game ends with a sense that this is just the beginning – a clear setup for future expansions or a sequel, as the heroes are now ready to fight back.

Invincible VS Should Continue To Expand Its Unique Timeline

The game features a completely original storyline that could lead to exciting new developments. While the Technicians have been relatively unimportant characters in the comics and animated series, mainly appearing in the story around Angstom Levy and making brief reappearances later on, the game reimagines them as truly dangerous villains. They’re actively using their technology to conquer and reshape planets, potentially becoming major antagonists who force unlikely alliances. This is demonstrated when characters like Titan, Battle Beast, and even Viltrumites such as Anissa and Lucan join forces with the heroes – all in pursuit of their own freedom.

This creates a situation where the heroes and villains could form a stronger, more lasting team. This might prevent the Viltrumite War from becoming as destructive as it was in the original comic book and the fourth season of Invincible. However, this could also make things more complicated for Earth’s heroes when dealing with aliens like Allen. The game also shows it can change the stories of existing characters, like Rex, and introduce new ones, like Ella Mental, giving them different outcomes than in the original source material.

These new additions create a compelling narrative that aligns with the franchise’s exploration of the multiverse. Invincible VS introduces a fresh direction for the story, potentially uniting the Viltrumites and humans while allowing the Technicians to reach their full capabilities. With downloadable content already planned, fans can look forward to the story expanding further. This is particularly exciting for Invincible enthusiasts, offering even more reasons to remain engaged with the game and its future updates.
