The debut of Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+ gave the Marvel Cinematic Universe two significant advantages. The Punisher Couldn’t Have Appeared in Born Again Season 2 for Two Reasons
Early in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, Matt jokes that if Frank Castle had been captured or killed, Wilson Fisk would definitely put his body on display. Matt then casually mentions he thinks Castle is simply “out there doing his thing,” which seems like a way to write the character off screen. However, considering how the first season of Daredevil: Born Again ended, it’s surprising that Frank wouldn’t still have strong feelings about police officers using his symbol while patrolling the city.
Frank Castle, the Punisher, was mentioned frequently throughout the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, but the season finale made it clear he wasn’t needed for the overall story. The plan to defeat Kingpin and the group inspired by the Punisher’s methods could only succeed through legal means – by proving Wilson Fisk’s actions as mayor were wrong in a court of law. Matt Murdock ultimately exposed Fisk, leading to his public downfall and exile, even though it meant revealing his own identity as Daredevil.
Essentially, there’s a behind-the-scenes reason why The Punisher wasn’t in other Marvel movies – the same reason you don’t see every Avenger popping up in each other’s films. If they did, there wouldn’t be much of a story left to tell! Marvel has been navigating this challenge for over ten years now, and just like in the comics, it actually works well.
There’s another reason why Frank Castle (The Punisher) wasn’t in the Daredevil: Born Again series, and it comes down to behind-the-scenes issues. Jon Bernthal is scheduled to reprise his role as The Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but his current filming commitments made it hard to fit a Daredevil: Born Again appearance in. Bernthal will next appear as the Punisher next week in the Marvel special, The Punisher: One Last Kill. This special, which he co-wrote and stars in, might raise even more questions about why Castle wasn’t in Daredevil: Born Again, especially since it seems to take place while he’s still in New York. Following his recent appearance in The Punisher: One Last Kill, Frank Castle will also appear in this summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The trailer for the new film suggests he’ll have a significant role alongside Spider-Man, which is exciting for fans who’ve seen this team-up in comics but never expected it on screen. However, given the title of his recent special, “One Last Kill,” it’s likely that Frank Castle will continue his violent ways in the movie.
It appears the reason Jon Bernthal’s Punisher wasn’t included in Daredevil: Born Again wasn’t due to the story itself, but rather decisions made behind the scenes. Fortunately, this didn’t impact the show’s quality, and it just highlighted how much fans want to see him reprise the role. Thankfully, it looks like his future as the Punisher is now secure.
